Helloooo vape community! I just switched from cig (2pad+) on May29th to vaping. Lovely friend of mine sent my hubbs and I a setup each. eleaf istick 20w and Kanger nano. I've read a lot of the informational posts, watched so much youtube my eye holes hurt, and was hoping to get more of a personal experience opinion. My husband doesn't seems to be having a problem, but I have had the most gawd awful raw throat problem. I've gotten some high vg juice and that seems to help it a LOT, while making sure I'm drinking plenty of water. I know that it can be from quitting smoking, but I am a bit paranoid that I'm not using my equipment right. What wattage would you all suggest for a beginner? Atm I'm using it at 15 (because the coil says 15-20). I've also switched from a lung hit to a mouth to lung and that's helping a lot as well. Anywho I'll stop before this gets any more long winded =) Any newb advice is more than welcome, thanks!

Welcome Totem!

Nice friend you have :)

What nic level are you using? Nic and PG can contribute to the "throat hit" which might in turn lead to the "raw throat" sensation you're experiencing....

I'm guessing you're using the 1.2 ohm coils. After priming a new coil quite well, I'll start low (maybe 10W for the 1.2 ohm coil and about 12W for the 0.5ohm coil.) Take a few hits and then nudge up a bit. Tighten the airflow, and you can simulate more of a MTL hit, rather than the wide-open lung hit.

Depending on flavor of juice, I might run my 1.2ohm coils as high as 18-20W; the 0.5ohm coils upwards of 23W Any more than that, and most stuff is too gnarly for me.

Glad you're here :)

Hi Totem and welcome to the forum. Congrats on your vape journey. Some people have an averse reaction to pg and switching to high vg has solved that possible issue. Staying hydrated is good, so that variable is out. Nicotine level can cause throat hit, but you would know if the nicotine was at the proper level, though you may want to consider dropping yours a bit. Mouth to lung is good, you might try getting a smaller drip tip (mouthpiece). 15 watts is within limits so I doubt you're getting too hot a vape. You didn't mention burnt coils so it's another indicator you are doing it correctly.

It could be totally unrelated. I caught a cold two weeks ago and had a terrible sore throat with it. Took ten days to get over it. (and I never get sick)

Flavors can cause irritation. Koolada bothers my throat. Other than that I'd say give it a few more days and see if it changes. Good luck.

I'm using 12mg atm. After these juices are gone I plan on dropping down to a 6. It has been getting better, and I WAS (love that) a 16yr smoker.

I have it set on the single-hole airflow setting. I did notice at the full 20w that it was ravaging my throat, which is why I toned it down to the minimum. I didn't know if there were any adverse effects of running it lower when the coils min is 15.
I did notice that the "heavier" flavors we have (a really strong coffee flavor that my hubs LOVES) kills my throat. I'm using a reallly nice Bananas Foster, really light and nice on the throat.

And thanks for all the welcomes:)

Welcome. :)

I started vaping at 7 or 8 watts, that was enough to give me a sore throat and terrible dehydration. I remember those days, drinking iced water and all sorts. If you are finding it a bit much, dial it back.

There are no rules. There's no reason to not vape a Nano at 10w if that's what's comfy.

Oh yea some of the heavier flavors can get quit rough depending on how much vapor you get

As for recommended settings that's a general setting for best coil/heat performance.

You can drop a bit and see how it goes, there is no set in stone power level as every juice vapes differently

1: Raw throat is a warning, yes. Worth being paranoid about.
2: I would suggest trying a 5 to 10 watt setup for a beginner.
3: If the coil says 15-20, then 15 should be good, BUT, the istick20 has a known problem of putting out more power than what it says, so ignore the numbers on the istick and just adjust to taste.

The bottom line:
turn down the wattage.

As long as you are using the 1.2Ω coil, you can go down to about 15 watts, there you should be getting the correct power applied. The iStick does not have step down, so below 4.2v the device cannot regulate the power correctly, meaning anything below 15 watts the device is still applying 4.2v. This limit could also be 3.7v, I can never remember which for sure. If it is 3.7v then you can go down to about 12 watts using the 1.2Ω coil. I'm sure someone can verify the correct voltage.

If you attempt to use the .5Ω coil in your 20watt iStick, you will always be applying the full 20 watts of power, regardless of if the limit is 3.7v or 4.2v.

additionally.....
iSticks are more geared towards Nautilus/Protank style tanks that use 1.8Ω or 2.2Ω coils. Those higher ohm coils will give you a wider range in lower power devices that do not have step down, like the iStick 20/30.

You can use it with the 1.2Ω coil, you will just be a bit limited to how low you can go.
