I'm going to be trying this really soon, hopefully if I have time tonight. Thanks for posting great details on this!

I havent ventured into coil building yet, but I just got my kanthal on Monday & probably picking up a mod tonight. Its time to dive in head first, and I have a ton of evod/protank coils to play with!

Great stuff!

I don't have the correct materials.... Built my protank with 32g K and wifes cotton balls.. Lots of vapor but tastes like cotton... 2.9ohms wrapped 12 times on a 18g needle... Need to get some lower gage wire and sterile cotton... would work well if I could taste something other than cotton =] First try was on an 16g needle and that came out to 3.5 ohms... same effect however lots of vapor but could only taste cotton...

may try 20g needle next..

A "tornado" coil would be interesting.

I was thinking the same thing except in my RSST. Run duals and have the larger part of the tornado cone right at the air holes. I have a perfect set up in there now running a horizontal version of this same build. Wrapped the coil tight with cotton. I was trying to use ceramic wick, but it just kept falling apart.

If my build wasn't so perfect right now I would do the tornado one, then try dual tornado one. It will be my next venture after building the magic coil from the other thread this weekend.

Incidentally the coil I have in right now is .5mm ID. Used a 25 gauge needle to wrap around. I had to do a 14 wrap of 28g Kanthal to keep the ohms up. It is at .5 right now.

Coil sounds spot on Roasty. You either need to tamp in some more cotton, or the head is loose or something. Shouldn't leak whatsoever. If it's leaking, it's flooding so vapor production isn't right either.

I stuffed in quite a bit of cotton, to the point it was a pretty dense pack. i'll try again tonight and see how it goes. the head is not loose; double checked.

question about the coil.. before stuffing in cotton, and looking at the coil from the top, is it supposed to sit just above the top end of the rubber grommet? i can push it in a little more.. but worried the coil may singe or melt the grommet.

I have the coils pretty close to the grommet. At or a tad less than 1/8". I wondered about that too, but since the coil OD is less than the grommet ID, and the top of the grommet save for the metal air passage is protected by saturated cotton, it hasn't been a problem at all.

Interestingly, while dry firing a failed coil repeatedly seeing if I could get it glow evenly, I was amazed that the grommet had only the slightest singe where the negative leg was. If I had done that with a spaced coil, I know I would have cooked it to a crisp.

How much cotton is really kind of a feel thing. Best I can describe it is about the density of a carto, though a little less than a Boge. I find tamping in 4-5 small pieces with the same 18ga needle from the coil build seems to work well. Prime with 10 drops or so, assemble, check ohms one last time (to insure the coil didn't get hosed when tamping the cotton in) and vape on. Will have a bit of cotton taste at first, but that goes away quickly.

Edited to add. Helps to keep the top (negative) leg away from the juice opening. Makes it tough to get the cotton density right with that wire in the way there.

I had poor performance with a 20ga coil. Found the smaller diameter coil kind of sputtered due what I presume is a volcano effect. Worth a try though if your looking for lower ohms, 18ga with 28ga kanthal will likely be better.

I too get some cotton taste, but goes away pretty quick for me.

I tried and failed horribly. I wrapped a 28 gauge kanthal around a 1/16 drill bit. Coil was fine. Everything touching. Put it in. I think I messed up and it was too long. I burnt the grommet and get a nasty taste now. I will try again with some thinner kanthal.

Which type/brand of cotton are you guys using, looking forward to trying this but need to know which cotton to get. Thanks!

Q tip cotton is good for almost all of these types of builds. I personally use organic cotton. Anything else you should probably boil to remove any chemicals.
