LOL, well you've got a bit of time before you get the wire to figure that out. Here's a chart with coil examples from people who have built them with 30G:

szts45.jpg

'Size' is the inside diameter they wraped on. For micro coils you want between 6 and 10 or 11 coils. Micro coils are 1/16" inside diameter and perfect for clearos. I like them and use them on my drippers all the time, though I go a little bigger in my Trident.

What PV are you going to put this on? Are you going to use cotton?

Beautiful chart! That's gonna come in real handy. Thank you.
I have an MVP2 coming. I will eventually get into mech mods and whatnots but for now I'm feeling more comfortable with something like the MVP.
Yes, I will be using cotton.

So from what I gather so far I'm fine with the 30g. Awesome! I have no interest in micro coils for now. I just wanna be able to wrap a good coil for flavor chasing. Clouds are cool and all but that's not really what I'm going for at least for now.

Micro coils have nothing whatsoever to do with cloud chasing. They actually help you get a bit more flavor and vapor out of the higher resistance coils. They do very well at 1.5 to 2 ohms.

You're very welcome :)

With an MVP I would try a micro coil at about 1.5 to 1.7 ohms with the stock air hole in the dripper. 30 gauge will be perfect for that and I suspect this will be great for flavor with the small air chamber :thumb:

I've been reading the forums for several months now and it shames me to admit this but I'm struggling to get a grasp on the ins and outs of coils, micro coils, ohms, and all that stuff. I figure I've always been a hands on learner so that's why I decided to just go for it and figure it out as I go. That info you just gave is very helpful because as you can see I'm not entirely sure what I'm talking about:blink:

That was the impression I got from another ECF member and that was why I decided on the 30g. But I keep seeing 28g being mentioned and being all the rave.

And ribbon wire, and braided wire, and Mundy's Magic Wire, and on and on..... (MMW is actually pretty cool, though!)

You can make great coils with 30ga, they heat up quickly, and you can get the resistance you're shooting for without a coil that's too big to fit into your head. I highly recommend you get a wire chart, and wind your coils by length: a) decide what resistance you're looking for, b) look at the chart and figure out how many inches of wire you will need, c) Measure out that length (plus legs) d) wind until you've used up that length e) Check it with an ohmmeter or a mod that can measure head resistance!!!

Also, one of the most important things you can do is to watch your coil when you fire it (with wick and juice). With glasses on, please! I've seen lots of videos where they pay careful attention to how the bare coil heats up, but very few where they actually pay attention to how it works when "wicked and oiled". Glasses are imperative to avoid getting spits of hot juice in your eyes! But if you actually watch how it works, you will start to see what makes a great coil great, and a bad coil bad!

HTH!

WOOHOOO!!! That's what I wanted to hear. I'm feeling so much better about this now:headbang:

I started rebuilding 2 weeks ago now. Got myself some 28g, 30g, and 32g Kanthal A-1... I've used mostly just the 30 since I started. It seems to have just enough play to it to make up for mistakes without kinks in the wire, but not enough to make it hard to wrap. It heats nice, and seems to just plain not want to die. wrapped a couple coils with 32 gauge, one popped with a longer dry burn the other wouldn't shape right, kept bending and kinking..

I want to get some 26 now, and a little bit of that ribbon wire, just gotta read more about using it first.

Hells yeah that's great stuff there. Thanks for sharing. I try not to get caught up in the "latest and greatest" way of thinking. I try to keep things simple and go with what works well. So this chart you mention, is it like the one Ryedan posted or something different?
I'm a bit of a knucklehead and have lots of scars to prove it. But it only took one of my ego batts going boom for me to realize the importance of always vaping safely. You safety concerns are much appreciated. Thank you.

Actually, the chart I was talking about is much simpler. This one's not as accurate as it should be....:

Kanthal A1 Wire Resistance

28 awg (Ω/in) 0.4 ohms
30 awg (Ω/in) 0.7 ohms
31 awg (Ω/in) 0.9 ohms
32 awg (Ω/in) 1.2 ohms
33 awg (Ω/in) 1.4 ohms
34 awg (Ω/in) 1.8 ohms
35 awg (Ω/in) 2.3 ohms
36 awg (Ω/in) 2.9 ohms

And do: wire length = (desired coil resistance)/(ohms-per-inch of the wire gauge)
30ga is about 0.7 ohms/inch. If you want a 1.8 ohm coil, you do 1.8/0.7 = 2.57 inches of wire for your coil. Doesn't matter whether it's a big diameter or a small one, loose or micro-style. If the coil itself uses about 2-1/2 inches of wire, it will be about 1.8 ohms. You need to leave some extra at each end so you have legs to handle it with, of course, just add that in before you cut the wire!

(Edit: I need to find a better table; I believe 28ga is about 0.44 ohms/inch)

(Edit #2 - The MVP is a great choice! Not just for the built-in ohmmeter (which is fantastic for DIY coilers!) but just an all-around great deal, with great features, built like a tank, and great battery life!)

one tip (well at least it is easier for me)

I anneal the wire before wrapping. That means taking a lighter and running it along the wire until each part glows red at least once. It takes some of the spring out of the wire and makes it easier for me to wrap a neat coil.

I know others say it is not necessary. I just find it easier.

Heck yeah guys, great stuff and such needed information. I knew I could count you all to help me here. Damn I love this forum!
TAD that's a great pic of your coil and I can't wait till I build one myself. I know I'm gonna fall in love with coiling and wicking just as much(probably more) than I have fallen in love with doing my own liquids.
Think I'll try for a 1.5 for my first attempt. Maybe 2.0. Either way I know I'll be doing lots of (safe)experimenting in the weeks to come.
