Ok now I'm even more confused lol. You guys are saying torching makes it easier to wrap, but on the video I watched, He torched it after it was already wrapped.

Does torching it make it more plyable or less plyable?

makes it more bendable and also oxidizes the surface too

It takes some of the spring out of it. That allows it to keep the shape you bend it into better.

It's called annealing. When we were doing it in the school workshop thirty years ago we got it up to orange heat, IIRC. ... or was it cherry red? One of the two anyway, you don't want it any hotter.

The important bit is how you cool it. If you let it cool slowly then it is annealed. If you cool it quickly then it is hardened.

For that reason, it's probably better to torch the wire first using a lighter moved slowly over the wire. It cools down too fast if you point a torch at it because you have to move it fast. I have a feeling that the torching when setting the coil has more to do with blacksmithing -- you set the shape with it hot because it's softer when it's hot. Then it cools down fairly fast. Once it's in the right shape having it springy is an advantage.

I've found 30ga works great for 1.8 ohm micro coils.

I wrap about a dozen wraps around a 3/43 instrument screwdriver... then on very low flame torch it in tweezers just like rip trippers does on his videos, only i use a regular burnz0matic propane torch on very low flame. Return the nice torched and squeezed coil to the screwdriver and pull straight on one of the legs of the wire causing the coil to unwind a couple wraps, repeating it on the other leg (ie:both ends) until a have a nice straight clean 8 winds coil. Install it into the coil base using the screwdriver as a mandrel sitting in the slot. I'm getting a very consistant 1.8ohm coil, time after time. I wick with sugar and cream cotton yarn (3 strands) and no flavor wick. Fantastic flavor and vapor performance.

Note...Works best if you have an optical comparator or similar decent magnifier so you can count and verify the coil as you're pulling/unwinding the extra end wraps. It gives a much more consistant shaped coil and leg structure. I think MacTechVpr calls it the tension winding technique. see thread linked for more info.

If you guys already have the coil on your PV, or at least wrapped, why not just fire the PV to heat the coils?

With the method I use, I am torching to tighten up the coil and then putting it back on the mandrel to unwind a few of the end wraps so i have good tight and straight legs on the end wraps of both ends of the coil. Makes a more consistant final product. It's possible to get in the finished head to tighten up a sloppy coil, but there isn't much room in the head to tweeze the coil nicely.

Again though, as others have mentioned, you can glow the coil in tweezers with a decent butane lighter. A torch isn't really required.

I am just getting started myself playing around with a couple genes, a pulse g and a bliss, trying to make ss mesh work right too, so keep that in mind heh heh
You'd probably get more answers looking or posting in the rba forum..
Rebuildable Atomizer Systems

I mostly just run cotton on micros in my drippers and am very happy with it. But yeah I've been suprised with the sharp tartness flavor difference using ss mesh the couple times I had semi decent mesh setups running, but so far its just been so damn finickey for me that ran out of mesh to work with. Tried to recycle the mesh bits unrolling it and retorching it to no avail. So I'm now waiting for more mesh to get back into trying to improve it into being more dependable for me. The best tasting so far has been the cotton coated mesh following the rip trippers method in the link below. I'm leaning towards running an eckowool sleeve over the mesh or just bailing on the mesh and going with something like nextel ceramic rope wick instead. Tried cotton yarn in my genes but it didnt pull the juice up properly which was disappointing as i really love cotton wick flavor when it works right such as in a kanger or a dripper

Anyway you might be getting harsh taste because of a few hot spots between your coil and the mesh.

I found this video helpful for that issue..
pulse method to get rid of ss shorts...
Genesis Atomizer Hot Spot Fix When Using A VV/VW Device - YouTube

Heres a vid i found helpful where rip trippers uses cotton wisps coating the mesh between the coil and mesh. similar to running a sleeve.
Thats the last thing I did with mesh and it worked pretty well and flavorful, but my build needed improvement so back to dripping for now.

Trying 32g at 2.2Ω with 5 wraps to see what tastes better. I mostly use 28g with 10 wraps at 1.5Ω. Notice how the liquid pools on top of the wire... nice tight wrap. IMG_20140128_091127_042.jpg

First and foremost, get an ohm meter. This is a must.

Second, this thread will give you an idea of the number of wraps for a particular ohm goal, based on wire thickness. You still need to test on an ohm meter to be sure.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/reos-mods/446263-micro-coils-ohms-description.html

Third, this thread will help you wrap better coils.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/reos-mods/413000-rm2-rba-2-0-reomizer-2-rebuild-tutorial.html

Fourth, if these links do not help, use the advanced search function at the top right side of each page. There are hundreds of threads talking about what you are looking for.

I just upgraded to an iTaste SVP. I have the iClear 30's that it came with and a Kanger Protank II. I want to start making my own wicks for both of the atty's. I'm new here and would love some suggestions on wicks and wire. I would like to try the organic cotton and am thinking about going middle of the road with the 30 gauge - always give a couple extra/less wraps to get the right ohms.

What kind of cotton are y'all using? Just cotton balls from the pharmacy? I saw someone post about going to Walgreen's. I saw RipTrippers Youtube's and know that I can make my own and save even more money this way. Won't mind burning through the wicks so much with flavored liquids. Looks like Amazon seems to have some good prices on the kanthal wire, also. Any place better? Love ECF - been so much help with figuring things out.

If someone has the time, I would appreciate a shopping list - drill bit size for wrapping, where to get the cotton and kanthal wire and anything else I might need. You guys rock!

You can get organic cotton balls at any pharmacy. Drill bits, I have a set for my cordless drill so check out Home Depot or Lowes. As for the wire, this is where many people are getting it and it has free shipping.

There's nothing wrong with 30 gauge wire - I use it nearly exclusively in my PT2. What Ωs you achieve w/ 30g depends, as it does with every gauge, on the diameter of your wrap and the number of wraps you make.

With ProTanks, the best option for coiling, IMHO, is 'micro' or 'nano' coils (for space reasons firstly, and also for performance reasons!) - there's a good thread with lots of information that should help you ProTank Micro Coil Discussion

Hope this helps
