To test the resistance(ohms)(symbol on multimeter looks like greek char 'omega'), which is what I assume you're trying to measure, you'll have to be able to put one probe on the threaded part, and one probe on the center post (you didn't mention what atty, so I can't be much more specific)... Be sure your multimeter (a voltmeter would only test volts, and would not work for your purposes) is set to measure ohms (usually stated as 20ohm on the meter)...
If I understood your question, this should help?

Pic of 'zeroing out' or calibrating the multimeter, notice mine doesn't goto 0, it reads 0.4-0.6, I need a new one ($4 @ harbor freight):

If you protect them from moisture and air pollutants, they should be good for decades or more. If you really want to be protective: A small air tight container such as from "Lock & Lock" with a silica gel desiccant thrown in for good measure will do the trick. That'll keep 'em til the great grandkids need 'em. :)

oh thank you. i would have purchased the wrong thing. i just bought 25 bulk 510 attys. didn't really want to have to take them out of the wrapper (long term storage) but oh well.

NP, Volt only meters have their place (I've bought a couple), but if you need to read Ohms (like you would be trying to do), they're no good for that. I plan on building one into a device just to read the Volts between the batt and the atty. You need a multimeter to read Ohms, resistance, and to read Volts on a larger scale, again, I picked mine up for <$4 @ Harbor Freight locally, if there's one close to you, I recommend them, great prices... Where ever you get one, turn it to the appropriate Ohms (probably the lowest Ohm setting, on mine it's 20), calibrate it by touching the probes until it reads all 0, if it doesn't read all 0, take it back... Then you should be all set to test the lot...
