Let's see....

They hacked Equifax
Equifax data breach could create lifelong identity theft threat

They hacked the IRS
Massive IRS data breach much bigger than first thought

They have hacked Yahoo
Yahoo tops the list of largest ever data breaches

They have shown they can literally hack anyone:

NOW we hear that practically EVERY SINGLE thing with a computer processor in it such as Phones, computers, smart watches, etc. have major security flaws called Specter and Meltdown.
Spectre and Meltdown processor security flaws – explained

The bottom line is if they want your info, they can and will get it, if they haven't gotten it already. Your data is NOT safe. You just have to learn to accept some level of risk.

you should be fine but like everyone here is saying the only way to truly protect your info is never put it out there. But bull city people are nice I do love the handwritten thank you on my order slip, as well as a few times, found candy and stickers in the bag as well.

Paypal is great if a site offers it but some don't. What I did long ago was get a Bluebird card from AMEX. Online it's free and they mail you a card, just like a CC. The best part is it is prepaid and free to load, just go to Wal-Mart. They AMEX nor Wally charge you to load it or spend it, there's no monthly fees or anything.

AMEX gives you the same protections as if you have a regular CC through them. I've never had a single problem with them ever but I doubt they or really anyone can beat PP with protection.

I've had my cc info stolen by a customer (in more way than one..:sneaky:) in a subway restaurant who started a brief conversation with me & using some type of device that's able to read the data if they get close enough. Never let your guard down and never use a debit card, especially attached to a bank account.

I now use rfid sleeves for my cards with chips and thankfully my cc companies are on the ball and call me the minute they suspect anything suspicious. Most of the time you aren't responsible for fraudulent charges, however you should be responsible in what manner you use your cards and where.

Your situation makes me wonder why they even went to RFID chips. All it takes is about $20 worth of parts to steal the info, heck could probably go to YT and find a video on how to build one.

I do the same, use Bluebird for all my online purchases (including through PayPal and Amazon) and basically only put enough money on the card for the purchases I'm doing, the balance is never over $10 unless I'm loading it for a purchase. The process also helps with reducing impulse purchases as I only load the card with cash at a Walmart.

And I never had an issue with Bull City with anything, one of my favorite vendors.

Discover USED to have a feature where you could log in and get an alias CC# backed by your primary card. I used this when shopping online and had a different CC# for every single site I used it on. That way if something did happen, I would know exactly who to blame. Alas, they got rid of that service. They were probably running out of card numbers.

I got a text yesterday morning from my CC about a $637.82 charge on my MasterCard at a Walmart out of state. This comes about 1 week after a vape purchase with that card. I only use that card for vape supplies for the most part. At least they make it easy to reverse the charge and get a new card. If this had been my debit card, I most likely would have had to find the problem myself and then go in to fill out paperwork. I never, never use my debit online. It can still be compromised but I try to limit that as it's more of a headache. I prefer PayPal as I've never had an issue with them so far. I'm sure it's just a matter of time for them.

I do a lot of online purchasing. Not just vaping stuff either. Over the past 2 years, all 3 of my credit cards and my debit card have been compromised. Fortunately, I have email alerts set up with each bank card that notify when my card has been used without it being physically present. So far I've been lucky. They issue a new card, and I'm not out any cash.

Unfortunately, I think the Equifax breach has really messed me up. One of the banks called to verify an address change to Florida. Never been to Florida. Now, after I checked my credit report at Transunion, it still shows the Florida address and a FL phone number. I tried to check my credit reports at Equifax and Experian, but without explanation, they deny my access to it. I can't even initiate a dispute.

As your CC and your bank if they can intervene for you. It's actually in their interest to keep your credit score up, as they are able to "tempt" you with "valuable" offers.

I'm not surprised Equifax wouldn't deal with you directly, they often won't, even with proof, although perhaps calling the credit bureaus might help, especially if you have supporting documentation. I think I had to do that at one point in my life (much younger though) and processes like that tend to leave me slightly hazy, but I did have to repair a breach. There should be a customer service number listed. If there isn't, go talk to you local branch bank manager about how to fix it. That's actually what they're there for, among other things.

Good luck,

Anna
