I started using cotton just because I found it wicked much better in the top-coil cartos. Now that I'm using Kanger bcc's, until I do a complete recoil/rewick, I just replace the loose silica wicks with cotton - well, just because :D

Time to find that tutorial. :) Cotton rope? Cotton balls? Kitchen twine?

What do you think about hemp? This is a serious question regarding wicking materials, folks. Hold your jokes lest this thread gets closed. ;)

i know, right?

seems like no one is mentioning that part. Sure, that the levels of metals are not much (if any) higher than in the air we breathe- but no one seems to be crying foul about "pre-tested" cartomizers. :glare:

I refuse to worry about silica. There's at least one thread here that talks about the different types of silica, and having the wicks tested. But, *apparently* the silica in the wicks is the amorphous type that is not the type that is linked to silicosis. Though I've lost track of the thread, and haven't seen the latest in lab reports.

Much of this comes from the 'zero threshhold' standard held by the FDA and other Fed 'consumer' agencies, and it gets worse to the degree that the testing equipment improves. Used to be, just for an example, that x parts per million of some substance labelled 'carcinogenic' was a standard threshhold. Then came the zero threshhold standard, then they were able to test at the x parts per billion, and then per trillion, etc. etc. Like you say, much of the stuff banned is way lower than what is accepted in air and water...and 'natural/organic' veggies for example - tomatos if man made would be banned because of several carcinogenics including nicotine- a 'natural pesticide' for certain veggies and fruits.

Oh the nonbelievers.... :D

No, not acid rain. The foggy, soft mountain air, full of moisture and those beautiful negative ions that make us so happy and healthy...

I use rolled cotton batting from CVS pharmacy - check in the cotton wick wiki link in my sig. Same as cotton balls, just pull and twist to make a wick. I've tried bamboo, hemp, cotton yarn, cotton twine; but still prefer the cotton batting -YMMV :D
