Burning Coils, is this normal?

I'm using an ego one clr rebuildable head on an evic vtc mini. I'm using .38mm SS316L with 5 wraps on a 3mm screwdriver, and the coil reads at 5ohms (approx).

Firstly, it just doesnt seem to work on VT at all, i'll have it set at 30w and 420f and it just tastes burnt. When I used ti wire (4mm), I would have it set at 65w and 510f and no problems at all.

On power mode, it's generally fine but I cant seem to go above 30w without it burning. Even If I have it at 25-29w it will burn if I vape for more than 2 or 3 seconds. I'm used to taking long slow draws (on vt mode) so this is quite frustrating.

I'm new to using stainless steel so just wanted to make sure if this sounds normal or I'm doing something wrong.

Not sure what gauge wire (26-27?) you're using but if your reading 5 ohms on 5 wraps there is an issue with your meter.

Halve your watts and work up slowly. 23W-25W might be your max with a .5Ω coil
Where did you source the wire?
It may function better using a different (custom) TCR value.

I got my wire from Vaping Wire

I'm not totally sure how to use the TCR, I did some looking around and people were talking about numbers like 0.00092 etc, and all I can see on my device is the normal temp control screen just with TCR at the top.

Start with the lower watts.

Plenty of time to play with TCR values later.

I'm not totally up to speed on your device but a quick look at here eVic-VTC Mini - Joyetech shows that not all firmware supports SS. You may have to update.

Yeh i'm in UK, I'll give stealth vape a go next time. And when you say start lower watts and work up slowly, how low and slow do you mean? And once I do get that bit right, what should be the limit of the coil, wattage wise?

I'd start at about 15W and play up to about 22-23.
Plug your details into Steamengine/coil wrapping: Heat flux above 25W is in the RED.
It's not gospel... but is very useful.

If you are using high VG liquid you may want to try a few drops of distilled water in the tank to aid wicking. It may be that the build you have in there just needs some tweaking.(less cotton).
Burning cotton is not normal.
If one starts at low power/temp. and edges it up slowly until the flavour starts tasting a "little" burnt then backs the power down a little, one should never have to experience a full on burnt hit. Cheers.

I'll give that a go. I've also worked out the TCR on my device. It seems to have improved it but I may have already done the damage to the coil, so I'll try it on a fresh one later. Also its not a spaced coil in there at the moment, does it need to be spaced for TCR, I cant seem to find a definitive answer for SS.
