I just started using an ego and have been experiencing a burnt smell and taste. Tried different carts, different liquids, topping off, refilling... Just happens without rhyme or reason. If I driup a couple on the bridge it seems to go away...but the cart is full...I'm frustrated cause today was supposed to be my analog quit day. I used it a few times over the past few days... More today though.

I think it is probably burning old juice junk in the atty. One time my battery button got pushed in my purse and I started smelling this awful smell and after that happened my atty tasted horrible and burnt and smelled awful until I cleaned it out.

How many drags are you getting from a fully filled cart before you get a burnt taste?

If you're taking continuous drags one after another, the liquid may not be able to wick to the atomizer fast enough. If the flavor is okay when you're dripping, I'd think it has something to do with either the cart being dry, or the filler not wicking correctly to the atomizer bridge.

Just clean your atty by submeging it in rubbing alcohol for about 15 mins then let it FULLY dry for about 30. Put on a fresh cart and that should take care of your problem.

I wouldn't recommend using rubbing (Isopropyl) alcohol at all. While most of it will evaporate off, isopropyl alcohol turns to acetone in the liver. Instead, use a PGA like Everclear or high-proof vodka. Mixes great with orange juice too.

definitely clean it, although i have never cleaned one and shall look more on the forums.
i changed my atty and it fixed my burnt taste.
the other atty i have still works just tastes bad, i would say it would have to do with liquid build up residue of some sort, that seems to be the main problem.

also make sure nothing is melting, burning on your cart. that would be bad

I'm thinking along those same lines, big. What foam do you use?

I used the MarineLand Rite-Size "U" aquarium filter covers. I picked up a three pack for around $7 at PetSmart, and they will last you a long time. Do some searching around here using "marineland" or "blue foam" as your search strings. There is a lot of good information available here.

i have had same problem with my 510 what i found out was that fibers
from the bridge was contacting heating coil.i used a tooth pick to pick them out and problem went away. i know the fibers are suppose to help wick juice to coil but i have had at least 4 attys that had this problem.
i also clean my attys every 2 weeks. i boil water in tea kettle
and pour thru my attys this has been working fine for me for the last year.

I also think it is a wicking problem. Very common with new users using stock filler. I use the zero-filler mod (search in the Joye 510 forum), with excellent success.

I am going to recommend not using any kind of alcohol to clean an atty. Yes, it works, but it also over time will dissolve the adhesives inside the atty. For cleaning, I use Crest Health Pro nonalcohol mouthwash, 10 min soak, followed by lots of hot water. Works very well.

The best way to keep an atty clean is to have a strong battery and a cart that wicks properly without flooding or allowing the atty to go dry (burnt taste). Take care of these things, and cleaning becomes less needed.

Pulling the wick threads out is also not recommended. Sometimes the threads are around the coil, which gets broken when the threads are removed...dead atty, bye bye. If it it worked for you, that's great, but consider yourself lucky. I killed a few doing this in the beginning, thinking "what are these threads...lets pull them out!!". Those threads are a good part of what makes the 510 atty so great.
