Got my Vision spinner 2, aspire nautilus mini, aspire k-1, and kanger gengitank (all 1.8ohm) on Wednesday and went to a couple of local shops to test out some flavors. My girlfriend is the smoker and I vape much more leisurely. We got 18mg for all the e-liquids and various brands. Every single one I try just doesn't taste nearly as good as it did in the store, and it burns my throat to high heaven.

I've been reading a lot on the forum that this is probably due to the high nic % and not being used to it. So I kept myself super hydrated and kept at it. It is just really hard for me to notice the flavor and enjoy it when I have to cough after each drag. Ouch! I think I'm just going to cave and buy some 0mg for myself. I believe everything I tried at the shops were 0mg and they were all fantastic. Does the nic really mask the flavor that much?

I have tried every setting on the spinner and tanks, different liquids, and still the same result. I have read that a lot of people have issues with not wicking enough, ruined atomizers, priming.... My head is just spinning. Sometimes I will get a smooth and flavorful drag, but it is so hit or miss. 90% of the time my throat feels burned and I cough. My girlfriend doesn't seem to have as much issue with this burning sensation, but she also notices that the flavor seems lacking. I hear her cough sometimes as well lol.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Most of the throat hit comes from the nicotine, If a nonsmoker wants to vape for some reason 0 nic is the way to go, 18mg nic is gonna be way harsh for a non smoker. There is no sane reason IMO to try to 'get used to it'.
My suggestion is for a nonsmoker to use 0 nic only. Some nic does have a peppery taste, some doesn't.

It is always a good idea to prime a new head before use and give them a few un powered primer puffs then let them sit a few minutes before pressing the fire button & vaping.
Thick or high vg% liquids wick slower,,, sweet, dark or colored liquids clog wicking material & gunk up coils / heads more rapidly.

I shoulda been more specific, priming a new / unused head means dripping drops of liquid directly on the wicking material until it is saturated before filling tank and threading the base & tank together. Depending on the type of head used and size of drops this can be between 2 ~ 10-12 drops.
Primer puffs are a way to ensure liquid is flowing into the head to hopefully prevent dry / burnt hits.

The flavors are going to taste very different, and harsher once nicotine is added. I also let a new atomizer sit for ten minutes to wick. If you are using Bottom Vertical Coils (BVC) in your Nautilus tanks, then you shouldn't use pure VG liquid, you need a PG/VG mix to thin it out. I use VG liquid only with the Bottom Dual Coils (BDC) atomizers.
Good Luck, and I hope everything works out!

I've smoked a handful of cigs, never really liked them much though. I take the occasional drag off them, but I just don't like the flavor. Hookah on the other hand is delightful.

Ah yes I have read about putting drops of the liquid directly on the wick. I will try that next time and see how that goes. We did let them sit for 10-15 minutes before giving it a go.

Yes these are BVC coils and I believe all the liquids we have are either 50pg/50vg or 40pg/60vg at the most.

Going from the 0mg nic testers ( vape shope ) with a cheap iclear tank to 18mg nic open airflow asprire mini will be night and day and ya your gonna choke yourself out especially if you've never smoked before .... .......

Lol yeah so I've noticed. Its not awful and unbearable, but just not enjoyable. Picking up some 0mg this weekend!

I've been keeping at 3.3 or 3.5 so far.

Prime new / unused BVC heads by dripping 4-8 drops directly on the screen inside the head.

Not trying to go all dad on you here but, 18mg nic for a nonsmoker borders on being nutz or severely misinformed, try 0nic, 3 at most.

On edit;
Burning throat & weak flavor is usually associated with dry hits, which is bad and should be avoided at all costs.
All sorts of nastiest can be released by burnt wicking materials & coil gunk.

These coils are 2 days old, could they already be gunked up or burned? :(

edit: I found this article in the Vaping for Anxiety thread and it is very interesting to me.

http://themindunleashed.org/2014/10/nicotine-are-we-wrong.html

I don't suffer from anxiety or depression... that I know of, but I have self medicated with other substances in the past, so who knows. I know I enjoy the "buzz" of nicotine, I just don't enjoy actual cigarettes, thus vaping!

Could be you burnt them to begin with by not priming them properly. no way to fix that.
Using them at too low power will cause rapid coil/head gunk build up also, but, before you find out what power levels work best you'll have to get some 0nic.
18mg nic is very strong for a nonsmoker and likely causing 90% of your harshness problem.
