I know I only have a few posts to my name, but I've been vaping for about 5 months, every day, and I didn't start having problems until I tried filling cartridges myself. The flavor and smoke I am talking about is exactly like the smoke produced if you tried to burn a plastic water bottle. The stuff coming out of the atomizer burns my eyes-- really stings them!-- and smells and tastes horrible. Now that the atomizers started doing this, they seem to be much more prone to poor flavor when the liquid is running low. Previously when a cart was getting low, the flavor would get more "dry" or toasty, but now it quickly becomes plastic-like and nausea-inducing at the first hint of dryness. Soaking in alcohol, boiling-- nothing has helped them so far.

I'm ready to write them off, but what I'm most concerned about is if my foray into refilling carts myself is what killed them.

May not be an atty problem but a cart filler problem, you say "when the liquid is running low", sounds like you are vaping cart filler. Sounds as though you were using prefilled carts but now you fill yourself?
I find trying to find the 'perfect' filler for long lasting wicking is one of the hassles with this 'hobby'. Some are much better at it than I am. The cart mod thread is filled with great ideas from folks always coming up with great alternatives but the cart and the juice and keeping the flow going is, well sometimes work.
Hope you don't write it off, I'm on my 5th month too and some days everything vapes great and some days... frustrating. I have to keep asking: "But this IS better than lighting up .... after .... and coughing" , Isn't it?
Hang in there and visit the modders forum. Good luck !

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm pretty confident it is the atomizer. The reason I say so is because after cleaning out the atomizer and switching to a fresh seLes factory cartridge, the burnt taste comes back after about 10 normal draws or after one long draw. Switch back to my one good atomizer on the same factory cart and performance and flavor returns to normal. I can hit it and abuse it all I want and the horrible plastic smoke taste never appears. I have tasted a low cartrdige singeing and while bad isnt quite the same and doesn't really have noxious qualities.

See, now I think you hit on something there.
There seems to be a enormous obssesion with cleaning going on here with attys.
I myself have been radically against this strange brew of soaking in a myriad of solutions for no good reason. I have also tried many and repented when one of them actually worked (**hangs head in shame**). but remember everytime you soak and so called clean an atty, imo, you have to now break it in again and let it perform as it was made. don't keep cleaning over and over. imo, atty's take time to fire back up. If you soaked and dried, it might not just fire back up right away, drip a little, vape a little, blow out and try again.
I have started new atty's and they have drawn hard in just ten days, but once I cleaned and ( I won't recomend, removed the wick under the coil) and had a little patience, they came back to life.
( note : I use a joye 510), some say removing the inner wick is not good, I've never had an atty the WAS good with it. To each his/her own. Best of luck.
