vaping at a higher wattage on a .4 coil at 27wats and I get a burnt flavor. I am not sure if my coil is burnt out or simply the wattage is too high. I believe my juice is 50/50 I've only been vaping this coil for a week and I wouldn't consider me vaping a lot. never changed my coils before so I don't know if this is normal or simply the coil is bad already.

any ideas or tips on how one can actually tell if the coil is bad or not. I do have back up coils. wrote another question on juice a few days ago people said 30wats is a decent strength to be vaping at with this coil but when I was going 27wats it was tasting and smelling burnt

i opened up the coil the outside looked fine looked brand new but the inside had all this black gunk wasn't sure if that was burnt cotton or what someone in a diff thread told me it was just burnt cotton/wick and the coil was still good just to rewick it although this was not a rebuildable coil. yea probably should i was just toying with it as i couldn't taste any of my juices and didn't know why but people helped me out with that

The black is either build up, or burnt cotton. That coil is probably done.

Prime a new one, put it in, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then enjoy.

Start at 10 watts, and work your way up .5 watts at a time until you start get a burnt taste.

Back off a little, and you're set.

You may need to raise the wattage over the life of the coil a little at a time.

I run my .5 coils anywhere from 10-13.5 watts. I like my vape cool.

Hope this helps.

the producers found a great way to make more money.
instead of selling replaceable coils with silica wick, they sell them with cotton wick.
every new vaper burns their wick sometimes in the early days.

a burnt cotton wick means you end up having to buy another coil.

Using the Ohms law calculator, You're providing only 3.2 volts into the coil.. not very high. If everything is working as it should, you shouldn't be getting a burned taste. Here's some troubleshooting ideas...

1. lightly scrape the coils with something small. if black particles break off, then it's your juice causing buildup.
2. If you can replace the cotton, take the cotton out and run it under water. If it is heavily discolored black, or dark brown, then it's burning the cotton.
3. Check for shorts in the wire. Sometimes it measures one thing, but it will change when jostled. See if there are ohm fluctuations.
4. IF you can, check how saturated the wick is from time to time. There could be problems from the juice not wicking fast enough to the coils and causing the cotton to burn.

Those are the four I would check. Usually, when I get an atomizer, there is a slight learning curve. I expect some bad builds or go through a few coil heads straight off. Learn the ins and outs of the atomizer. Atomizers have their own strong and weak points.. once you find them, and find your work around, then you should be all set.

Wick saturation varies depending on how pigmented your juice, power applied, airflow and your draw style. Pre sub-Ω and <.2mm coil diameters average coil life you might expect was 3-4 days I've observed. Larger coils (more wick media) delays saturation. But only to a degree as factory winds are only slightly improved in efficiency. So depending on the maker between the above and a week. You're about at the typical limit. I've pushed Subtank coils out to 45W with very light juices. However, factory coils are open (spaced) winds and moderately wicked for an airy diffuse output (favoring clouds). Too much power/draw for the flow their wicks and wire can provide and you'll scorch (cotton) early. So don't expect greater vapor/volume density by applying more power. That will require rebuilding.

Good luck all.
