oh, now I feel stupid. I realized you were talking about a burnt occ head, and hadn't actually used the rba.
please disregard me.
no worries, brother! all part of the adventure :)

btw, love the username - I have saltwater aquariums and my wife's fave 'coral' is the Xenia :)

sorry to drag up a dead thread, but I came across this while pondering about why my subtank taste burnt when I turn up the power.
anyway... How the f*** did you manage to even hit it with no wick? Not being mean here, I'm seriously curious. Didn't the Lewis just rush through the holes when you screwed it in?
Haha, it's okay. The OCC That I was using was burnt out. And the RBA that I had was new and had never been used. So I said I just opened it and it isn't wicked, I was talking about the new and un-used RBA. Not the OCC which I burnt out.

yeah, I'm dumb.
I actually tried to install the rba head on my subtank last night, but kept getting a bad reading for resistance when I screwed the tank on, with the preinstalled coil. It read fine, and fired without it, but then when I screwed it together the screen kept saying 0.0 ohm. I'm gonna whole this further after work, but did you have this issue as well, or did it fire right up for you when(if) you installed it?

No i didnt have this issue,, i wish i could help you out. But i am also pretty new at this. So im not sure why this is happening to your tank. Mine's working fine, But it seems to be leaking from everywhere. hahaha. I'm giving up. at this point i think im just bad with electronic devices. they hate me.

I'm not sure why I had that issue either. It went away the next time I tried it. Although the hits tasted like crap off it. Not sure if it was machine pull, or the cotton thread too tightly, took it apart to wash it off and haven't tried again yet, just hooked up my other occ head. I'm having good luck with them at least.
if its leaking, my first thought is you didn't properly run the wick to cover the juice channels in the barrel. That would allow juice to leak into the rba deck and it would then drop through the air intake, and out the mouthpiece. Then I would check to make sure everything is screwed on right, and you didn't damage an o ring,I did that many times with evods and such

i didn't prime it, now i feel stupid. I reduced the wattage coz the taste wasn't right, the burnt taste came way later. But maybe the coil is already gone. I dont know
I went through two coils the first time I changed them because I didn't know enough to prime. It was that google search that lead me to this forum!
You are not alone.
I ended up having to buy new coils.
