Once you remove the spike plate there should be a short length of wick sticking out the bottom (flat side of the spike plate). This is the part that touches the coil and will usually be dark, or black. Hold the spike plate by the spike with a pair of pliers or tweezers and hold over a hot flame. I wouldn't use a cigarette lighter or candle because they are not hot enough and will leave carbon deposits on the wick. You need something that produces a blue flame such as a butane or acetylene torch or the flame of a gas cooking stove.
If the wick gets pulled out of the spike, use a pair of tweezers and grip the wick right below the metal cap and push it in from the flat side until the top of the cap is flush with the lower part of the angled cut of the spike.
If you still don't get proper flow you may need to adjust the height of the wick in the spike.
Lowering it will increase flow and raising it will decrease flow.
