The atomizer is probably 'dirty'. Usually if you're using cartridges and the cart goes dry, the ejuice more or less gets baked onto it, giving you a burnt taste for quite a while. You can either change out the atty or clean it.

Many tell me that using something like efferdent (denture cleaner) cleans them off nicely. Being that you're at work, you might have to improvise with something like a high acidic soda like maybe coke. Just remember to be careful with what you're cleaning with and dont use something toxic.

I have only one atomizer with me at work and started getting the familiar burnt taste so I figured the cartridge was getting dry so I topped it off and am still getting that taste.

I tried using a different cartridge and it is still happening. Is this one of the symptoms of an atomizer going bad?

Normally this is caused by running the cart too dry. The burnt taste is actually the wicking material has been burnt by the very hot atomizer coil. You can normally get past this after several refills of the cart. if you just can't stand it you will have to change your atomizer. It will eventually go away on it's own.
