Yes to what pufZepplin said above!

I'm not a big fan of using tap water as, one, the NiChrome/Kanthal coil itself can corrode (rust) and, two, mineral deposits (water spots) can form. If you must use water, use distilled water. You can typically buy a gallon for under a buck.

Also, using isopropyl alcohols or ethanols to clean can ruin the seals and insulators in/on the coil and cause taste issues or leaking.

After cleaning with either vodka or distilled water, "dry-firing" the coil in short two-second pulses to dry the coil and wick works well.

Then saturate the wicks using the methods above, or even dripping PG or e-liquid on the coil before you screw it into the base.

I agree with cleaning first to see if that corrects the problem, and if not, time for a new head.

I sometimes clean mine by just sitting them under running water for a few minutes. You can blot them dry and go ahead and reinstall them without letting them dry completely. If you do that you will get ~4-5 hits that produce no vapor, then you will start to get vapor again. That's just the amount of heating it takes to evaporate all the leftover water out of the wicks.

Throw your old heads in a Baggie or something and save them for if you decide to get into rebuilding them at some point. Or save them and send them to me so I can rebuild them. LOL.

 cleaning/dry burn kanger bcc (coils)

it's pretty simple
remove the silicone cup washer
wiggle the chimney stem off

now looking into the coil area, you see the (two) flavor wicks just sitting on top
carefully remove those wicks (tweezers), set aside to re-use

now you can see your dirty, gunked up coil/wick

rinse that carefully off, blow it dry

now screw coil back into the base and screw the base onto battery

with coil/base on battery, push fire button (3-5sec at a time)
and watch coil dry out, then turn red, burning excess residue off

do that till your satisfied, THEN I soak it in VODKA to remove funky burn taste/smell

rinse/dry/put flavor wicks back/snap chimney stem back on/replace silicone cup washer

drip some fluid onto little wick-ends sticking out (priming); fill tank, install base

:)

I use the ProTanks exclusively and have found that cleaning them just by soaking them in hot water for a few hours works pretty well... sure Vodka does too but I can't imagine wasting perfectly good vodka like that!!!:2cool:

I fill a bowl with as hot as I can get it tap water and put the disassembled protank in there, let it sit a few hours, then leave it on a paper towel overnight- reassemble and fill... the first few vapes usually lack full flavor but then its good to go. After a few times they get too gunked even for that and then I just replace... I know taking the head apart and cleaning the coils directly probably works even better but at 1.00-1.25 a pop, I just dont see the value in taking the time... unless you just like tinkering.

Good luck!

I am so sorry guys... I am using a bottom fed Kanger EVOD tank/coil system... I do have extra coils; I am just not sure the coils are bad; I ran out of juice in one that's when I noticed the 1st burned taste. Basically, I am wondering if I can clean everything out and rinse the wicks (saw a video on YouTube) and if that will take care of the burnt taste... Or is that how you tell your coils are going is that burnt taste; seems more of a wick issue than coil, but I know very little.

First determine that it's wicking correctly. With a pair of tweezers remove a little of the wicks and try again. If the burnt taste goes on, make sure to turn down your voltage if you're using vv. Leave head overnight in alcohol and try again, at a lower voltage. Head failure is usually when the heads are too clogged and go into short. I've had heads going for 4 or 5 months with no trouble. Also, wash your heads before first use ALWAYS, burnt taste often comes from leftover machining oil in the head.

I have been wondering about how I know when these coils go bad. I got an evod a couple of months ago and am still using the same coil it came with. I have soaked them two or three times in hot water and then rinsed well. It seems to still be chugging along... the vapor production seems to have gone down but the taste is fine. Is there a point where I should just put a new one in even if the taste is ok? Sometimes I don't care about the vapor as long as its decent.. just wonder if there is a health issues I should worry about. The things are cheap but I like to use things until they are completely done!! ;)

If it works for you, then it works for you! It's a personal thing. No wrong answer

Can't say I've had one last that long but my gut reaction would be- if it aint broke dont fix it!

Personally, I like fresh coils. There's a point at about 3-4 days on a coil where it just doesn't taste as good to me. Not terrible, but not as enjoyable. It kind of creeps up, but when it's there, it's there. At that point I will either dry burn or replace the coil. If you were to use a fresh coil you might notice quite a big difference in taste. Then again maybe not. I'm pretty picky about my coils, but everyone is different. Because I'm kind of picky I learned how to dry burn and build my own coils. Heads are cheap, but it like having the ability to just make a brand new one whenever I need it.

I did not know or even think of that...thanks :)

Indeed; my thoughts exactly :)

:2c:
preventative maintenance

if you taste that the flavor/vapor has gone moot on ya,
you waited too long...

I've found that if you catch it BEFORE coil failure occurs,
soaking at that point & kanger coils last a long, long time...
(before the point of dis-assembly and dry burn is needed)

if I encounter a stubborn stain (old juice flavor or burnt taste),
my extreme is a 5-10 min soak in wht vinegar followed by a rinse
then 5 min soak in vodka (to remove vinegar) -- rinse/dry/vape

I feel long term harsh liquids, boiling water, or compressed air weakens everything (plastic, silicone)

I evolved into this technique using kanger coils and it has turned out to be working very well
and now applying it to my Aspire/Vision top coils...

Have a question for ya...if the last thing I rinse with is the vodka...do I have to worry about the flammability of the alcohol? Or will that just dissipate while drying?
