Excuse me if I sound like a total noob, but, I am just entering the world of rba's. What are you guys using to oxidize your SS mesh. The best most affordable option is what I am looking for.
Thanks.

I've only been oxidizing SS mesh for a couple months but my first build was a good one and haven't had a mesh-related failure yet (using 400x400 316 grade). I'm using a Bernzomatic ST2200, which is not the greatest butane torch out there, but it was under $30.00 and is doing the job well so far. Any torch will do so long as it's working. I'd say look for one with a base that can stand on it's own and has a flame lock-on feature so that you can have both hands free. Easily available refills is a probably a good idea to consider, as is picking up can of butane refill while you're at it. You'll find these types listed under Chef's Torch, Culinary Torch, Kitchen Torch, and Butane Torch.

This one looks like it _might_ fit the bill but I can't vouch for it having never used it, but it's only $11.99...

the torch lighter should work but it might take way longer and burn a lot of fuel. Since you need to get the wick red hot a real torch seems to work best.

I was using a propane torch when I started cause it was what I had, then I went to this:

Werks great and even has adapters include, 2 soldering tips and even a hot air tip (make it like a mini heat gun, good for heat shrink tubing)

The blue flame from one of these

does the job safely & efficiently ;)

If I had a gas stove, thats what I'd be using

I have a mini butane soldering iron sold at Radio Shack for $23
It comes with a torch tip and a soldering tip
I like that the fuel tank is clear, so you can see how butane is left in the tank
I haven't see this feature on any other mini butane torch

I use a torch lighter also. The only issue I have with it is consistent heating from such a small flame, and the time it takes, otherwise have no issues (yet). Will be getting one of the mini-torch deals I keep seeing in vids, but till then the lighter'll do. Hot is hot, you just need to carbon/oxidize the mesh.
