Can 316L SS be used for coils?

Simple question not having any luck finding an answer. Recently it went around that gplat is nothing other than 317L stainless steel wire. The gplat was supposedly sent to a metal analysis lab and results determined the makeup of material was exactly the same as 317L. The makers of gplat have denied the results saying the composition of their wire is unique. I purchased some 316L to attempt a coil build. It is nearly identical to 317 with the extreme slight difference of more carbon particles. I can't seem to find any information regarding the use of 316/317 stainless steel as a coil setup. I spent a few dollars on the wire, and if it isn't safe it'll be used elsewhere. So, does anyone have info regarding the use or safety hazards of stainless steel coils? I know the mesh is used as a wicking material... Thanks, Matt.

Did a test coil with slab of cotton in the center. The 316L functions fine as a coil, and appears to produce more vapor when it reaches temperature. Kanthal A1 will boil and shot off the VG solution if directly placed on metal. The 316L seems to do the same with liquid inside the coil on cotton. So it appears to burn hotter. Still not going to try and build a functional setup with the 316L stainless steel until I can figure out if it's safe to use. AFIK I see no reason it should not be safe however. Someone once mentioned the possibility of the liquid and metal creating a reaction resulting in an unwanted chemical?

Long before a metal, especially an alloy, melts parts of it sublime, go from a solid to a gas. This happens all the time and it happens more the hotter it gets.

There have been NO long term safety studies on inhaling anything we use.

One of the components is Manganese. Google Manganese poisoning and tell me you still want to use heat something containing it and breath it in.

Or it might be perfectly fine in an atty coil. You test it for a couple of years and let me know how it turns out.

I made one coil setup using the 316L and not sure if it was the additional heat, or what but it made my mouth feel weird. Maybe dried out, or something. I just felt something was off and I shouldn't use that material for a coil. Switched back to kanthal after that build. Not saying the SS doesn't make a good coil. A 8 wrap 24GA appeared to put out same amount of vapor as a 4wrap 22GA kanthal.
