Hi there!

I recently picked up two Sony vtc5 2600mah batteries. It was recommended to get a good charger and I heard that I should go with the Nitecore D2.

I purchased it and it is currently being shipped. But then as I continued reading more into it, I heard of people complaining that it won't charge their 2600mah batteries and that it can only handle up to 500mah. Is this true? Anyone have a Nitecore or information on it and can confirm/deny this?

thanks in advance.

It has a charge current of 500 mA (per battery). That's the amount of current it can generate to charge the battery (while it is charging). mAh is a relative time measurement and not the same thing at all - in your case with a 2600 mAh, it would mean that you can draw 2600 mA for 1 hour (or 1300 mA to two hours, 650mA for 4 hours, etc.) from a fully charged battery at 100% efficiency (but batteries are no where near 100% efficient). The 500 mA rating on the D2 is unrelated to the mAh of the battery you are charging, except of course that to fully charge a 2600 would take 5 or 6 hours. In reality it won't be that long as your battery is never that flat and and probably can't be brought back to life if it is.

People saying this are confused between mA charge current and mAh capacity. The only relationship between the two is the time it will take to charge the battery and you wouldn't want to charge at any more than 500 mA as it would probably damage the battery.

So the D2 is a good choice for your Sony VTC5s, don't let anyone tell you different.

Comparing charge current and battery capacity is like comparing horse power of a car engine with the size of the gas tank. No relationship.

Thanks for the quick reply.

This is what I was figuring. But I had seen multiple people in a review say that it would only charge their battery half way since they were using a 2600mah. But didn't really make sense why they were having that problem. Just wanted to double check on here before I started charging my batteries.

Well I'm glad the money I spent won't go to waste and I made a good purchase for my batteries. Thank you!

Your welcome. Yeah as Abraham Lincoln once said "Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet " :)
