I have been having trying to find a straight forward answer to this question but seem to keep going around in circles!I have been needing a 18650 battery for my Provari and one for my flashlight but have not found a answer yet,and hate spending hours online for a answer that should be easy to find! When I first started my search the question was what is the best 18650 Lithium Ion battery you could get was?I had some say AW and most vendors recommend AW but I have learned that the Panasonic will blow the AW or MNKE that someone else mentioned out of the water! What I haven't figured out is there is a NCR18650B,3100mAh,2250mAh,and some other mAh,then there are the Panasonic CGR18650CH 2250 mAh,then there's orbtronic,Callie's Customs,Readilast,International Outdoor, and Xstar, that are all NCR18650B 3400 mah or NCR18650A 3100 mAh Panasonic cells, that they add protection to,and wrap them with their companies name, and size of the battery, and charge about twice what the original Panasonic cell costs!!From what I have read even AW batteries are Panasonic cells!!What I am trying to find out is which of the Panasonic types, the NCR18650 or the CGR18650,are needed or better suited for ecig mods, and which would be better for a flashlight? If there's one thats best for a mod and flashligt both, then what would the other be best used for?I am pretty sure the Panasonics NCR are unprotected and that's why other companies like orbtronics, add there patent protection circuits on them, but the CGR type are for high capacity and are a safer chemistry, like the IMR 18650 batteries? This information should be made more clear, and I think there are more out there than me, wondering why the hell, this information is not better explained,or easier to find with a Google search!Google what is the difference in a Panasonic NCR18650 and CGR18650 and you still can't find a clear picture,or straight answer!Even on Panasonic's website I couldn't find what I was looking for! I believe that both are safe in a ecig mod,but the NCR is a protected battery, and the CGR is a IMR high drain battery? The 2250 mAh CGR since it's a high drain battery should be made with a safer chemistry, and might run about as long as the 3100 mAh NCR,and the 3400 mAh NCR might last a little longer per charge than the CGR,if I am not badly mistaken? If someone someone out there knows, will you please let me know! Thanks Thomas!!

Since you mention 18650 I'm assuming that you have the standard Provari with an extension cap
For the Provari you will definitely need a IMR or High-drain 18650 and it also must be a button top
A flat top battery will not connect with the positive contact inside the Provari
Here is the battery I use in my Provari, damn good with a higher mAh rating than AW IMRs

You do not need a protected battery in a Provari because it is all built into the PV

If you have a flashlight that takes an 18650 battery you can use the same battery but you probably will want a protected battery because there is likely no safety features built into the device
More than likely a flashlight will work with both button top and flat top batteries
I know my Olight Warrior flashlight takes an 18650 and will work with flat top and button tops
In that case any of the protected batteries on the following page should be good

What they said and reiterate the need for a button top. Got one on Ebay and had to use my skills to create a button top as it would not have worked otherwise. The Provari and others have a plastic piece that will not allow a flattop battery to work. That piece is I suppose to keep the battery snug and to prevent damage to the center post.

protected cells are being used to avoid a lawsuit, the circuit also provides a safety net should it be in the charger too long, inserting the battery backwards or say you drop your mod and somehow the protection circuit is bypassed, the charger becomes faulty and the current draw becomes excessive, while a non protected battery should work just fine how safe would you feel with that 10 millimeters from your face all day not knowing if it could be reaching critical load mass.
Also from what I have found (can be mistaken) the cgr has a higher output amperage of 10A max whereas the ncr is somewhere around 5 max

The Provari's boost circuit depends on a high-drain battery's output current to produce higher volts that the supply source. This means the CGR will suit your Provari. A lot of the Panny CGRs come with a flat positive end. Some come with a nipple. You will only be able to use the nipple-top CGR. The other Pannies are protected. They will not allow the amp drain that the Provari will need. The protection circuit will read the amp draw as a short or overload and trip the protection.

The batteries from Callie's ARE Panasonic CGR18650CH. If you buy in bulk, direct from the manufacturer, they will put your custom logo on your batteries, also.

I know what you are talking about,I spend way too much time searching, reading and looking for information.Really I have started to notice I spend too much time, and lots of times I will find a great deal, but I will keep searching trying to find a better one!I'm about to stop that shtt cause you end up wasting too much time to save $1 or 2!
Yeah, I've spent alot of time on CPF researching batteries and chargers
Its easy to open a can of worms while looking for a quick answer on CPF
Not everyone has the time and patience to research fully, the forum is fairly formidable
