As I stated in some of my previous posts I've been vaping now for like 5 years or more but for the last 3 years I haven't been following any of the technology via the forums

I had purchased my first reo about 3 years ago and it offered everything I wanted - juice mechanism!!! Sturdy !!! Easy to use !!! So....

I gave up on the forums as I knew I would be too tempted to buy the "next great PV" just to throw it out in a month when I already found what I was really looking - reo with cartos, and high nic good juice and life was and is good ! Lol

Anyways, I woke up from the dead and returned to the forums a couple months ago which of course led me to purchase a reo vv :)

I bought an rba for each of my reos and they have been great for the most part ! But could someone explain the air hole thing on the tap cap? Thank you super x as having the coil facing up, with the cap air hole in the middle of the coil and facing up has been a great help...

But could someone expand on this air hole science or tell me where to look ? Why only one air hole and how was the science of the diameter chosen for it ? I am Content with how it comes stock but I'm sure all the geniuses here may have tailored there's a little - what would be the pros and cons of drilling another air hole - what would be the pros and cons of making the air hole slightly bigger ? My guess would be a more cooler vape and looser draw (which doesn't appeal to me) ? Is it as simple as that ? I imagine it would produce more vapor but at the expensive of heat and draw? But I am me reign guessing - there any links that would explain this - has someone tinkered and found a slightly better solution than stock ?

Thx in advance

I can't speak to the science behind the stock air hole size on the RM2, but I can speak to what has worked very well for me. I drilled it to 1/16", and paired it with a micro coil/cotton wick. 9 wraps of 28g K A1 around a 1/16 drill bit and a wick from a good ole standard cotton ball is outstanding - nice warm full vape with great flavor. As Super-X explains, make sure the air hole is centered on the coil and you're good to go. Once you dial in what works best for you on the RM2, you'll be set. Good luck!

You would only want two airholes if you're running dual coils on oposing sides. It is best to keep the coil centered (horizontally) with the air hole as close to the cap as you can get it with out risking a short, and adjust it vertically to your liking (higher more TH, lower less TH).

The air hole diameter determins how airy (loose) of a draw you get. The stock hole makes for a tighter draw (have to suck harder). I know of a lot of people who opened up their airhole, including myself. Since the RM2 is pretty thin brass, I just took a pocket knife and spun it around in the hole slowly opening it up until I got it where I wanted. For me this was somewhere between 0.055" and 1/16th.

Since you have been using carto's for 3 years, you are probably used to a tighter draw. If you do decide to increase the size of the air hole just go slowly, a small change can make a huge difference (read: don't just jump in and drill it to 1/8th)

The vape you get is determined by 3 major things, for a given chamber size and juice.

The coil size and wrap style, Is it a big coil loosely wrapped or a micro coil tightly wrapped.

The wire type and ohm reading of the coil. Is it single 28, 32 ga wire, multiple wires twisted, Mundy's Magic wire.

The airflow how much and where by moving the coil.

As the ohms of a coil goes down the heat goes up. So if you twist some wires together, or get real fancy and make some Mundy's Magic to get more surface area for juice, the ohms for a give coil type and number of wraps really drops and the vape get hots. To counter this you could put a lot more wraps on the coil but then it gets harder to fit the coil and it takes a lot longer for it to heat up.

So to keep a good heat up time you stay with less wraps for the multi wire coil but get low ohms and high heat. by increasing the airflow the vape gets cooler and doesn't scorch your throat. Also low ohms and more air flow produce big clouds of vapor, think Cloud Chasers. However as vapor production increase at some point you cross a line and flavor starts to drop.

Like most things in this hobby YMMV. That is why air flow control for RBAs is talked about and used. It allows you to play with different coil builds and airflow amount to find the perfect balance between heat, vapor and flavor.

another thing about air hole size..

yes it does make a more airy draw and you won't have to suck as hard to get a vape hit.

but this is only one feature for making the air hole bigger, what is even more important is what ohm coil you use, lower ohm coils need more air.. so its is important to have just the right amount of air feeding the coil.

I don't make my holes any special size, I do make them larger going slowly until I have enough air to feed the coil and get the most vape I can. if you been using stock air holes for a while, the first time you try a airy draw it will be a experience. after a few hits you wonder why you have not done this sooner.

just keep in mind the total equation.

the right battery + the ohms of the coil + the right amount of air = a great vape

with all this together you'll vape safe and vape happy

I received a second hand RBA that was drilled to 1/16". Initially I hated it cause it was very loose compared to my stock hornet but I stuck with it and came to love it.

I have drilled all my RBAs to 1/16" since then. I have never experimented with larger sizes.

Don't know about the science but I know I can't deal with airholes less than 1/16"

Ive been sticking with much larger wraps than 1/16s - mainly because i don't have a resistance reader at moment - i should have one coming tomorrow

The one time i tried the micro coil on 1/16 inch wrap i didnt have much luck on the taste and vapor - i'm sure i messed it up as i have only been building for a few weeks. Ive been more than content not paying 30 bucks in cartomizers a month and having more control over the vape with the rba--

The next things on my vaping list are more taste and a little more vapor - not a cloud chaser just little more than im getting - maybe its as simple as getting the juice flavored more for taste and higher percentage of vg? or maybe its the airhole positioning and size as mentioned here. I just got my second rba so time to experiment with that one once the resistance reader comes.

Now i have to look up this magic mandy wrap thingee- you guys killing me ! :)

GRACIAS ALL - exactly what i was looking for regarding airhole etc.

Hey Flex, wrapping micro coils can be a PITA when you're just starting out, until you get the hang of it. One thing that I found to really help me was DarkZero's coil jig. By no means is this mandatory for wrapping great coils, but its more of a luxury item that lets you make perfect coils quick and easy. PM the ecf user DarkZero if you have any questions about it, but basically it comes with .055" and 1/16th piano wire for wrapping coils around and makes wrapping a breeze.

Cool video superx - i just got my first roll of kanthal n i have those mini screwdrivers but i never used it like that. I will try it

Awesome input from everyone else too !

Whats the basic premise for going so small with the coils - little extra surface area for the wick and juice ?

Why is 29 gauge with 10 wraps better than 29 gauge with 6 wraps considering they are the same resistance (the 6 wraps having a larger diameter than the 10 microcoils)

Great stuff though - i gonna experiment my .... off

Thats what makes vaping awesome, at least for me. Granted its a royal pain in the ... sometimes when running late or battery messes with you but the other times its neat to learn and experiment.

Great tips.

The trick on any RBA is to find the right combination of three things. Airflow, heat, and wicking.

As you increase the heat (lower the ohms/increase the wattage) you also need to increase juice flow, and most importantly increase the airflow. If any one of those three variables is not working in concert with the other two you will have issues.

Funny thing about airflow is that this industry is just starting to figure out just how important air is in the equation. From there it's a never ending game of experimentation!

Flex, I've found that more wraps = better vape. The problem with larger wraps is they increase resistance (ohms) and wraps that are too small are more difficult to wick.

That's why I prefer micro size wraps - around 10 is a good starting point :)

Yeah i got a great vape on the microside finally ! Well i finally got an ohm reader (DUH) so i could be more aggressive with it and watched some more videos including yours and getting a great vape -

For some reason when i first did them 1/16 or 3/64 in the beginning i got a little bit of burnt taste n little vapor (maybe cotton was too tight choking it)

Anyways i finally see the appeal. :). Neat friggin stuff !
