I'm honestly surprised that tattooing women who get abortions on the forehead with a scarlet W (for .....) or M (for murderer) wasn't included with this law. And yes, it's actual law that's going into effect on November 1st in Oklahoma; it's not just some proposed bill, it's the law.

What would be publicly posted online under that law, even though names will be withheld, is more than enough identifying information to ID a woman in a small town and, with enough looking at public records, even in a larger city. I can't see how this is allowed with HIPAA, I've seen people in serious trouble for releasing much less identifying information.

I can see a need for statistics about abortion for public policy- say if they found out the reason for so many abortions was there weren't enough doctors prescribing birth control, someone could start handing out condoms or something. No one is really pro-abortion and the more that is done to prevent women from being in a situation where they need to obtain one, the better... but I highly doubt that's the intent with this law.

I really hope this law does not survive the lawsuit that has been filed against it.

Seems as though Nathanial Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter A just got a whole new meaning.

Seriously though, that law is an absolute abomination. Even with the name removed they're proposing posting information that even scientists and statisticians need to get approval for from an ethics committee and then have written documented consent of the person to using such data.

Absolutely despicable.

The irony is...with the new HIPAA laws....I couldn't even find out if my son who went to the hospital with chest pains while I was at work had been admitted or not. Do these people have nothing better to do with that money?

Lu

I almost died in the hospital after a routine outpatient procedure, and my wife couldn't even look at my medical chart because of the stupid HIPAA law. I was in a medically induced coma, and it's not like I could just wake up and give her permission to get a copy of the chart so she could get another doctor's opinion about what happened to me.

I read the article, and my jaw dropped. The more idiotic crap I read about government stupidity here in the US, the more I think we need a revolution to get back to what this country was supposed to be. It's insane the things that are going on, and people just put up with it.
