Getting a harsh or burning taste, which irritates my throat. Just recently swapped in some new protank heads/coils into my G50s/Hypertanks. Tried different juices, both DIY and premixed, also tried on my eGo batts and my Vamo. These heads were in a blister pack, so they should be fresh. Is there a normal break in period or something I need to do?

I'm vaping at like 4 watts to ensure I am not burning anything. The heads/coils are 1.8 ohms. Brand new.

I don't know but I just used a T3 that was sent to me for free (to make up for a shipping error by a vendor)
and it is not the real thing the coil does not fit my other T3's

with that being said the T3 reads 2.6 ohms I cant get it past 3.3 volts without a burning taste
I went to remove the top wick (thinking It was not wicking well) and there was no loose wick on top like normal and It does not look like there are too many wicks

I am just going to toss it

Try removing some strands on the flavor wicks and flipping the rubber "cup" that is around the stem. Protank coils always have too much wick that stop enough juice form getting to the coil. Just remove a couple stands until problem is solved.

I do this on every new head.

I have heard of flipping that grommet, people say it is useful to stop gurgling with thinner juices. How do I flip it exactly?

Oh man. The old "harsh thing".

Arnie, it's a guessing game. The guys above probably know more if they've used that specific stuff. However, you know me...can't avoid adding :2c: so here goes:

1) 4 watts is crap so you're not going to get a good hit anyway. Have you tried 7 watts just for kicks?
2) Wicking. Like said above. Dry wick = burnt vape/harsh vape.
3) Bad atomization = harsh vape too. So bad connections, low watts can do it even if wicking is OK.
4) Thinning juice sometimes helps.
5) if it tastes BURNT rather than harsh, that's wicking. You can't burn a wet wick. Burning only happens when it gets too dry.

Edit: tried to load a pic of a head to make sure we were talking about the same "rubber cup." I'm sure you know what I'm referring to.

Just pull it off the stem and flip it over. Sometimes it blocks the hole too much - depending on how much flavor wick you have. I swear all new heads come with too much wick. I suppose it is better to have too much that can be removed, than too little.

I would start with flipping the "cup" and if that isn't enough then remove a couple stands. I am certain your problem is not enough juice getting to the coil. Happens all the time with Protank heads.

arnie, i dont know if this helps or applies to you, but i am having to retire one of my EVODs, because no matter what i put in it, no matter how many fresh coils, this particular EVOD tastes burnt. i had put some 18mg Blue Moo from MBV in it a while back, and noticed the top of the EVOD looked frosty after that. i started DIY recently and thought it was just my juice that was crap, but the other day i put a known good juice in it and still had this burnt undertone.

Are you SURE it's not vaper's tongue? I went through the exact same thing for the last two days. Freshly rebuilt coils, or not. Different resistance, or not. Different amount of wick, or not. Different wattage/voltage, or not. EVERYTHING tasted like burnt crap, and hit hard on my throat. FINALLY, after eating some spicy tacos, and subsequently brushing my tongue like its never been brushed before, flavor all of a sudden came back. I don't know how or why, but it MIRACULOUSLY reappeared. Every single one of the favors/tanks I had been using, that previously tasted awful, tasted fine if not BETTER than they had before.

Remove those flavor wicks and you're gonna have a whole new problem--flooding.

Those things are there for a reason. Don't take them out. If the middle of those wicks are blackened, they need to be replaced. There's no way to clean them by dry burning and that blackened area doesn't wick well. Since you already have wick and wire, you already have the material you need.

If the coil and wick are blackened, they need to be washed and dry burned until clean. You might have to repeat the wash/dry burn cycle a few times before the coil and wick are back to working order. You should wash and dry burn after every Protank full of liquid. A few minutes can save hours of frustration and tinkering to restore order.

If it's just "harsh," as in heavy throat hit, then it means that the coil and wick are efficiently vaporizing a lot of liquid and delivering a nicotine punch. Throat hit comes from nicotine. If it's too harsh, you might want to dilute your liquid with some VG, which masks throat hit.

If it's "burnt," as in it tastes like a burning napkin or piece of cloth, then the wicks are too restricted in their ability to move liquid across the coil. The coil is vaporizing the liquid faster than they can deliver it. Silica wicks don't burn, but partially vaporized liquid and flavorings will first turn to gunk, and then the gunk burns.

You might want to try rebuilding the coil, but if you do so, make sure you have a way of measuring the resistance of the end result.

I was vaping at 7 watts, but turned it down, thinking maybe that was the cause. But still happening. Is the Hoosier we have here responsible for this?

IDK. I do know that "Hoosier" just refers to someone from Indiana. So...

Also, they don't make em, they resell em. So I guess you can test their C.S. Maybe the manufacturer just has a bad batch.

There was "boge-gate" a while back too.....(affected all vendors).

Hang in there Arnie! Backups for backups and all that....;)
This e-cigs stuff can be "fiddly". Don't give up.
