I've bought a Derringer clone from FT a while back, along with a couple other atomizers. As always i first put it into lemon acid (i hope that's how it's called, direct translation) and let it sit to clean up the oil. The other atties tasted good, while the derringer had some weird smell/taste i couldn't define. So i left it in lemon acid again. Rebuilt it, still the same. Hand washed it, then acid again. Still there. I just put a new coil and cotton in it, without the top cap, fire it and the vapor smells again.
I can't describe the smell, i wouldn't say it's oily but it's definetely there. It's not even mild, it overpowers my liquid's flavor. I assume the cotton picks it up the minute i lay it on the deck, i honestly don't know. I really want to get it running though, as it has had so much praise.
While it's dry with nothing in it, it has a faint smell of something. But fire it up, and it's overwhelming. I've tried it from 7w to 15w, from 1.2ohms to 2.3 ohms, always the same.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you can't get rid of it, have you tried replacing the o-rings? Those tend to hold machine oil flavor really well.
I haven't, thanks for the suggestion. I'll give that a go.

Edit: Just remembered, i highly doubt it's the o rings since i fired it with no cap on and the vapor doesn't get close to the rings and it still has that smell..

All over the place
I scrub with soapy water, then boil that. I then pour out the soapy water and then boil it in water with some vinegar. Change that out and then I boil in plain water, rinse and it should be good. Having said that, I have lucked out and not had any issues with machine oil on atties (but I don't buy clones generally, though I have bought a couple -- not that machine oil is only a problem for clones).

I'll try boiling it tomorrow. Probably a dumb question but do i take the o rings out before boiling?

You don't have to, but if you want them to be thoroughly cleaned, it may help to take them off and just throw them in the pot with atty. They won't melt or anything unless you accidentally boil the water out.

or maybe its a low quality clone without high temp plastics and the insulator is melting. If you already cleaned it and you are still getting a horrible taste, something else in there is probably burning/melting along with your juice.
Valid suggestion, i checked all the parts that can be seen and nothing is burnt or out of the ordinary. Plus the taste/smell isn't really of plastic or rubber (burn or otherwise). I haven't had the time to boil it but i will boil, clean and replace the orings and let you guys know what happened!
Thanks again

This is the exact reason why i think every vaper should own an ultra-sonic cleaner. I've had a couple atties come to me from FT that had a pretty bad film on them, but it was nothing 15min in my ultra-sonic couldn't take care of. I've also heard of people steaming their atties over a pot of boiling water with fairly good results, so if you cant afford an ultra-sonic right this moment there's always that.

Boiled multiple times (soapy water, vinegar, clean), scrubbed, the taste is fine for the first few puffs then its back it it's full glory. With the top cap removed, just cotton touching the deck. Incredible.
I don't know, i'll boil it again in soap and scrub it again and if it's still there it's going to the shelf. Such a shame.
Thanks for all your input
