I put bottles inside igloo cooler then put in freezer.

What's up w/ the tinfoil?

I also wear a tinfoil hat .. ;)

Seriously, though, although the blue glass bottles do provide some light protection, I went the extra mile with the tinfoil since exposure to light apparently is one thing that can degrade the nic, or at least I read .. some folks put their glass bottles in socks ..

Now, on a serious note. By the time I buy the base, flavorings, bottles and other needed supplies, is it really cheaper?

With me, it's not so much trying to save some money, although that's nice, it's more about planning for a worst case scenario ..

You can buy 1 liter of 100 mg/ml for anywhere from $114 to $140 which comes out to $11.40 to $14.00 for 1 liter of 10 mg/ml (Although I have no idea why you would want to buy 10 mg/ml nic).
That's under $15 for a liter of 10 mg/ml, not 10 ml or 30 ml but 1,000 ml! You can get a gallon of PG and one gallon of VG together for about $55 at Essential Depot with free shipping.

All that's left is flavoring. And, you can buy 120 ml of flavoring pretty cheaply if you absolutely must have flavoring. Not all people do. I got my 120 ml bottles of Tiramisu for $15.50 each with free shipping because I also bought a lot of nic at the same time.

So, yes much cheaper than most. There are a few places that are cheap enough not to have to DIY to save money, like MBV. They're cheap enough that you could just find flavors that you like then order juice at a higher nic strength and with extra flavor shots so you can dilute with PG/VG. That would be about as cheap as DIY. But, of course, it is a little bit DIY already.

However, if you're stocking up for the future, flavorings don't have the shelf life that nic does. Nic can last for many years in the freezer.

You have to think if you buy one liter for $25 that is 1000 ml, you can make 100 10ml bottles with it. So that’s $.25 per bottle (without flavoring)

If you pay roughly $3 for a bottle of flavor concentrate (15ml), you can make 15 bottles of fluid (10% Flavor) and that’s $.20 a bottle so all together you can make a bottle flavor and everything for $.45

vs

Paying $7-15 per bottle (10-15ml) at a local shop.

Another option is to buy commercially made liquid at a 36mg level as well as your own PG / VG .. by mixing a batch of PG / VG to the ratio you like, and then diluting the 36mg commercial liquid to your desired strength .. 36mg assuming a 30ml bottle == + 30ml of your PG / VG and you have 60ml of 18mg liquid .. do it again at 60ml / 18mg + 60ml PG / VG and you have 120ml of 9mg ..

Yes, it will dilute the flavor, however, there will still be flavor .. just not as strong .. you can cut the cost of buying pre-made liquid and it's an alternative to a full DIY ..

I'm a n00b to DIY (and to vaping in general, time-wise) but I posted this in another thread; I spent about $270 on DIY stuff; lab ware, flavorings, PG, VG, and nic base.

If I dumped everything into a 5-gallon bucket, mixed it up, and vaped it, the cost including equipment works out to around $0.03/ml. Even accounting for 10% waste, it would still be less than $0.04/ml.

And I even paid more because I bought smaller sizes of flavorings. Once I find a handful that I like, I can buy larger quantities and the cost goes down.

Keep an eye out for coupons, and for folks selling DIY stuff in the classifieds.
