Cartomizer questions

I've recently picked up my first carto tank (J tank) and a 5 pack of boge lr pre punched cartos. I used the condom method of filling the first cart, popped it in and it was initially very nice. Good flavor and good vapor. Then I decided to punch an extra hole as it didn't seem to be wicking very well and I was getting kind of a dull flavor. The vapor production was still decent however. I was having to drip on the top to get any real flavor. Well, the second hole didn't help and I was still having the same problem. I kept having to top it off to get any flavor. I decided to try a new cart, which also had the single prepunched hole and I added one toward the top hoping that would help with the flavor and sadly it has not. I'm at a loss. I don't know what else to do. When I top it off it tastes great but a few puffs later it's dull again. Any suggestions? Maybe I got a bad batch of cartos? I've ordered more boges as I've heard such great reviews and am waiting for them to arrive. But can I save these last 3? I don't want to give up on the carto tanks because I know they are great when working. (I ordered my wife a carto tank that came with one carto pre installed and hers works and tastes great). Any help is greatly appreciated.

one thing that annoyed me with the carto tanks was sub par wicking. Im a chain vaper and would have to take a dry puff or two every so often. Its simply a strong quick pull with out pressing the button, but it did help to get more juice in the cartomizer. As far as flavor went they do tend to mute flavor a bit compared to other methods of vaping.

Smok (Smoktech) single coil 1.7 or 2.0 ohm XL have been my long-time favorite. These hold 1.8 ml of juice. It's the carto I used to use alone and without a tank. I still use the same carto with IBTanked but I punch them.

Smok and Boge cartos are made differently. The filler material and the wicks are different. Filler material differences include amount and density. I have great results with Smok using 95% VG juice. Boges tend to work better with thinner juice while Smoks can flood with them. I use four medium-sized punched holes to vape my juice with a Smok.

How many holes to punch or buy pre-punched? Depends on the carto and the viscosity of the juice. The amount of filler surface exposed to the juice makes a world of difference. Ideally, there should be enough holes to keep the filler saturated and just short of flooding the carto. If you haven't flooded a carto by using too many holes then you don't know how many is too much.

I used Boges exclusively for a long time. I used the prepunched with 2 holes. I never had any luck filling with the condom method. I've always used a 20 guage sharp needle and filled with about 1.5 ml of juice by inserting the needle along the side and slowly filling while pulling up the needle to fill the entire length of the carto. I would do that on each side, midway between the wick holes. I would always get a little juice seeping out the wick holes. Blew out any excess juice from the center tube, popped it in the tank and vaped away. Boges are definitely packed tighter than other cartos which definitely makes them harder to fill. I've used juices up to 50/50 pg/vg. If you're vg percentage is higher you may have trouble with the Boges keeping up. You could thin the juice very slightly with water or alcohol, or use a different brand of carto.

I don't have an answer - just a couple thoughts:
1 - too many holes, or holes up high aren't a good idea - the thing should wick from the BOTTOM...
2 - I've had great results with stock pre-punched 2 holes, and with slotted - no dry hits and no floods (knock on wood). Is the carto SNUG in the tank? There needs to be a bit of a "vacuum" - you should see the occasional bubble from the carto after a draw as more liquid is pulled up into the carto. In other words - it COULD be the tank...
3 - You should try Smok cartos, and if you can get them, try Ikenvape cartos. They're all a little different.
4 - Don't expect the TOP of the carto to stay wet - again, it wicks from the bottom. So if it's vaping good, you're OK even if the top looks dry

Thank you all for the responses. I went ahead and ordered some different carts and will post back and let yall know what happens. I appreciate the responses and suggestions. I have flooded my first with making all 3 too big. And have just decided to try 2 big holes for now and if this doesn't work just put it aside until the new carts get here. Deleon517 I've tried the dry pulls and it hasn't helped. Train2 it is very snug and I get the occasional bubble on the holes I punch. I think I either just require different cartos for the different material or I may have gotten a bad batch. Either way I appreciate all the advice.
