Zapped pretty much explained it.

An atomizer used primarily for dripping looks like this: Vital Vapers : eGo / kGo 510 Atomizer [510-atomizer] - $9.99.

When you look at them, the inside will most likely look like this: http://media.photobucket.com/image/...20adds/lowbridgeandhighbridge901atomizers.jpg.

You screw the atomizer onto your battery, drip 2-4 drops of e-juice onto that metal mesh bridge, snap on a drip tip, and vape. 2-4 drops is typically good for about 4 to 5 "hits", "puffs", "drags", whatever you want to call it. When it tastes nasty (trust me, you'll know). simply take off the drip tip, drip 2-4 more drops, snap the drip tip back on, and vape! Repeat the process. This is "dripping".

Cartomizers look like this: http://ecigarettereviewsite.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/e-cigarette-cartomizer.jpg, and when you look at the inside, they look like this: Google Image Result for http://www.evcigarettes.com/product_images/uploaded_images/em-riva-510-cartomizer-inside.jpg.

Cartomizers come with "polyfill" fiber and needs to be "primed"; in other words, you need to fill a carto like a Zippo lighter, only more slowly and carefully. Once properly primed (dripping 20 or so drops directly into the polyfill, avoiding the hole in the center of the carto, while giving each drop time to soak in), you don't need to keep adding "drops" of e-juice.

I used to drip exclusively until I figured out how to properly prime and use a cartomizer. Now I use them exclusively, in combination with tanks. NOTE: If you're using cartomizers without tanks, you will eventually have to "top off" the cartomizer by periodically adding more drops of e-juice into the polyfill. A carto can last you anywhere from a week to two weeks. They're cheap, use and toss.

Atomizers are bit more expensive, but if properly used and cleaned, they can last up to a couple months.

Hope that helps.

Edit: some people prefer the "condom method" for filling cartomizers. Do a Youtube search for "cartomizers + condom method" to learn how to prime a cartomizer using this technique. Works, is quick, but very, very messy. Be sure to have a paper towel, a rag, and some hand sanitizer nearby. And make sure if you blow out the excess fluid, not to get it inside your mouth. I made the mistake of accidentally getting some 2.4 mg nic juice in my mouth, and I was pretty dizzy and nauseous from the little bit I ingested.

rocket posted 4 image links,,
the first two are of an atomizer, predating cartomizers
the third one is of a atomizer cartridge set-up,,something that was common more then year ago..it had a cartridge that you would drop a few drips into and then push back onto the atomizer, you could get about 10 good pulls before having to pull it off and refill
fourth one is of a cartomizer, which is a newer version of the old atomizer -cartridge set-up

the term 'atty' is taking on the meaning of a rebuildable genesis type atomizer, can be a real pita to build but once you get it ? it is low cost maintenance to keep going

at one point an atty was what you linked ,but that has since changed ,

at one point an RBA was a rebuildable atty [ie the phoenix],and the RTA was a rebuildable tank atty [ie the DID]

now a RBA is just about any rebuildable

but yea, dripping is does give great taste, but is just not practical ,,i only do it for testing flavors

Hm. All the atty's I've seen lately (and since I first ever saw one) was still about an inch tall and had that metal mesh bridge on the inside. Basic 510 atty's have changed since two months ago?

EDIT: Wait, wait a minute. I think I know what Denali is saying.

The pic to the cartomizer I linked to was an atomizer plus a cartridge. I see what Denali is saying. It was my fault for linking to the wrong pic.

Here is a typical cartomizer:

One correction... most people drip without removing the drip tip.
In fact, that was the original intention of the drip tip, and the reason it was developed.

In the Beginning God created tobacco and nicotine.
Now the tobacco was strong and held tars, other chemicals were added
and the FDA hovered above the tobaccos.

And God said let there be vapor and there was vapor. God saw the vapor was good
and separated the the vapor from the tobacco, God called the vapor good and the tobacco stinkies.
And there wave vapor and tobacco on that first day.

And God said let there be an atomizer to separate the nicotine from the tobacco and there was Juice.
So God made the atomizer and the atomizer separated the nicotine from the juice and it was so.
He called to steam vapor and there was smoke and there was vapor...the first day.

God said let the vapor under the sky be collected in one place and let the nicotine appear. God called the dry place the atomizer and the wet he called nicotine. And God said it was good.

God then created the atomizer to rule over the juice and nicotine, He saw atomizer needed a companion and building from atomizer he created cartomizer, to them he gave reign over the nicotine in the leaf and set them to rule over the juice and said it was good.

And on the 7th day God vaped.

******************************************************************************************************

Other have pretty much demonstrated the differences between atomizers and other things such as cartomizers, clearo, tanks, and anything else that has a juice reservoir to hold juice to feed the atomizer. Inside all cartos etc there is an atomizer. The atomizer is the heating coil itself.

When I am at home I drip, nothing else gives me the flavor and vapor of dripping, However there are times dripping is inconvenient. For those times I use a carto or carto tank.

I knew that. I just found that dripping into the drip tip rarely allowed the juice to flow directly into the atomizer. Usually a bit stuck to the inside of the drip tip and made its way into my mouth. Ick.
