Cartomizers and the "burn taste"...

Is it normal to taste a burning taste as the cartomizer heads towards empty? I think I screwed up loading my first few cartomizers, does using incorrectly filled cartomizers with a dry wick damage the wick?

I am trying to get used to this whole e-cig thing, and cartomizers seem to be easier than tanks for sure. I am just trying to figure this whole thing out before I pull out my remaining 2 cartomizers and fill them for the first time!

Thanks,

Hi

I want to make sure I'm clear what your asking about.

A cartomizer can be different colors, but generally looks like this:

Inside there is batting/filler material wrapped around a coil. The material is saturated with liquid which turns to vapor when it comes in contact with the coil.

There is no "wick" in a regular carto (a CE2 carto has one, but not many people use that style). If the filler is allowed to get dry and burns, it's literally toast. Once the material burns, you'll never get the taste out.

Yup, that is exactly what I have. So I guess my question is, If I accidentally used a carto while it was dry/filled incorrectly, does that do damage to the heating coil/batting material?

Also, am I destined to get a few drops of juice in my mouth on a regular basis? I think it might be caused by me over filling it, but it seems no matter what I do I end up with a mouth full of juice.

Thanks for the reply and all the info!

If you use it dry, it will burn. You should get a couple of dry hits before serious damage is done to the batting, but they won't be pleasant. It takes a bit of practice to fill a carto and even then you will occasionally get juice in your mouth, but that's true with pretty much all vaping gear.

I have a blog about filling cartos. It's about tank cartos, but the filling part is the same. There are many different methods for filling and I experiment all the time, this is just one way I do it:

That's the beauty of a carto tank - easy like a cartomizer and the tank keeps the carto from getting the burnt taste.

Looking into the "carto tank" it looks like it will solve a lot of my issues here. It looks like by purchasing one of the items from this page:

Electronic Cigarette - Cartomizers - DCT - Carto Tank

it will help me refill less often, see how much juice I actually have left, and prevent me from sucking as much juice through? If I purchase one of those, will my current cartomizers work with that piece of equipment as well? (boge 510s)

Thanks for all the replies. This is turning into much more of a learning experience than I ever would have expected. I never would have expected there to be so much depth behind the e-cig world!

Those tanks will make an excellent first cartotank for you. Cartomizers and cartotanks have a learning curve, but if you follow a proven method you should be up and vaping in no time. :) I've been using cartotanks for almost a year, and they are my most consistant and dependable juice delivery device.

You learn quickly. ;) The one problem with the metal cartomizers is that you can not view the juice level, so you risk vaping it dry unless you frequently top it off with more juice. Once a cartomizer's filler has becomed burned from a lack of liquid, you'll never get rid of that taste. You'll have to discard of it and start with another.

If you put a "punched" (holes) cartomizer in a cartotank, you can view the juice level easily to know when to refill the tank (before the level goes below the carto holes). The tank naturally feeds the carto as you vape. You should be able to get approximately 30 ml of juice through a cartomizer before the draw becomes tight and then need to be replaced in the tank.

The juice remaining in the tank can be saved when you decide to change out cartos. I generally just empty the tank's contents into a medicine measuring cup and use a needle/syringe to put it back. The Ocelot has a video on how to change out cartos with juice still in the tank.

I strongly suggest that you get a tank tool like the Slap Yo Moma tool to make this process faster and easier. The tool also saves your tank's o-rings from unnecessary wear and tear. Well worth a purchasing investment. It comes as a stainless steel tool or a less expensive delrin plastic option; both work equally well. Slap Yo' Mama Adapter : Big Daddy Vapor

I use a different method of filling a cartomizer and tank than The Ocelot uses. No one way is best or better, only the one that works best for you. Try her method and my method and see which one you prefer. I use a wood toothpick to plug the center air hole of the carto, therefore no juice gets in there that you have to blow out or taste.

Be aware that there are single and dual coil cartomizers, and either one can be used in any cartotank. I think most people prefer the single coil variety. The tanks that you linked to use a 45mm long cartomizer, so if you plan to continue to use the Boge brand cartomizer, you will need to purchase the Boge XL.

I actually just watched that video. I looked up carto tank on google, and one of your posts featuring that video was the first to come up. so far I have been very happy with the service from liberty-flights, but I am also wondering if there are other good sites out there to purchase from. The layout of liberty-flights.com is a bit hideous, and I would like to find something with a bit better of a layout and perhaps more information on products before I purchase them. Thanks a bunch.

*edit*

Another thing I would like to do is figure out a way to vape with minimal effort. I am willing to go through the learning process myself, but am trying to come up with the simplest method possible. One of my vaping goals is not only convert myself, but also get my dad into the vaping. He's been smoking forever, and I'm sure he won't put up with or go through the crap I'm going through trying to learn :p

(.......... link.. for some reason the site wants to shorten it and won't put it in the post properly)

A kit like this looks a bit more "Ready to go" than the starter kit I purchased (Riva 510T from Liberty-flights.com), Any suggestions/advice/thoughts on that kit?

*Edit again lolol*

does this site not allow e cig dot com or tin y url links or something?
