CE5 question

Hi everyone! So, i was cleaning my battery with metal pin, and i accidently pressed the on button. It fried the chip, but the battery works. So, does the chip regulate the voltage? Becuase i've been thinking about replacing the chip with a button and a diode (to let the battery charge, but only to allow current to pass when the switch is hit). This would only be temporary, until i get a new battery.
