OK, I know this is not an original idea, but perhaps my spin on the theme is different? I saw these cool emergency USB cell phone chargers on Ebay for $3 (shipping included) and thought "Wouldn't they make neat PVs?" Well, got them in yesterday and, since nothing was good on the TV, I found myself back down at my workbench. This is the result.

The device took 2-AA batts (3v total) and, with a voltage doubling circuit, to give you 5v @500mA output to a female USB, which you could plug your cell or other device which charges by USB. Neat concept, huh? Well, it was neat for about 10 seconds. Unfortunately, my cartomizer drew about 1.7 amps, so the circuit was soon smoked. Time for surgery!

The device now runs on 2-14500 900mAh batteries and is controlled by a MV 5v 3a regulator. Not only does it provide 5v @3a to the USB output, it vapes like a monster too! You have to remove the batts to charge, but I can live with that.

Pics:

Here it is, looking almost stock, eh?

Nothing like 5v vaping ;)

Wish I could show you the circuit board mods, but I busted one of the tabs that held the case together, had to use superglue to reassemble. Sorry

Cost (more than my usual)

USB Emergency Supply (ebay) $3
Regulator (madvapes) $2.25
510 connector (goodprophets) $1

Total: about 6 bucks

how do you decide which one to use for the day each morning...

It depends on the occasion, going to the pool: my FM radio mod; going shopping: my Janty Stick on a lanyard; watching the tube: my remote; etc ..

You are right, it is getting hard to keep track of them, chronologically. I will have to go thru my pics and make note of the dates.

Hey, this is a cool hobby :)

Very nice! I actually have 3 of these on oder now. I bought them about a week ago. Glad to see someone else has used one! Atleast I know it can be done.

Bought 2 of the white ones, but one of the stupid slide switch knobs fell under my workbench so I will have to tear my shop apart in order to make a second. I plan to do a VV version if I can find the part :( Also ordered a black one, just to be different.

Not much room if you plan to keep the original PCB in it, but I did it so I could use the original power switch and USB connector. I reverse-engineered the PCB, soldered leads where I needed them, then wired to the new 3-amp regulator. Wasn't too bad, next time I will do even better :)

You will like it, I am sure :)

Edit: I stripped all of the original components from the board (with the exception of switch and USB jack) and started from scratch. Probably could have used some of the original SMD parts, but I couldn't wrap my brain around it.

Hello Asnider,

Can you post any links where to get the battery pack?
And last question what did you use for the firing button?
I am thinking about gutting the whole thing and wiring up 2 14500 in parallel and hot wiring the usb to the batteries so I can charge the whole thing assembled with a usb to 510 connector and using my old ego charger.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
