They ain't banned because how else could we function as a modern society without being able to keep up with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat while we're flying? It would create chaos and pandemonium!!

Seriously though, it's because vaping is - in the eyes of the uninformed and misguided masses - seen as being the same as smoking.
The FAA regs require that we carry our batteries for electronic devices in the cabin, not it checked baggage. This includes laptops, cell phones and vaping gear. If the darned things are going to go boom, they want it to happen in the cabin where they have fire extinguishers and access to the problem.
