I remember a few years ago I saw a piece on 20/20 or one of the similar news shows. It was about people grabbing the gas nozzle and catching on fire. These fires were supposedly started by static electricity. The poor fools that were on fire were grabbing the nozzle, pulling it out of the fill pipe and turning the nozzle into a napalm flamethrower. Then they started dancing around shooting the flames everywhere. It's really pathetic how the news media will take a freak accident and scare the hell out of people so they think it could happen to them at any time.
While these types of fires are possible in a gas station whenever a spark is present, it is highly unlikely. It doesn't matter if you have a Ceil phone, e-cig or if you are just sitting in your car then getting out to pump more gas.
However, if you find that you do reach for the nozzle and create a spark, the best thing to do is hold the nozzle firmly against the fill pipe of your car. then the spark will not ignite the gas coming out of the nozzle.
I once had an incident when I was in high school. One of my stupid friends decided he would check to see how much gas I had in the
tank of my motorcycle, so he pulled out a lighter so he could see what was in the
tank. Of course the fumes coming out of the tank ignited creating a flame coming out of my tank. He then proceeded to blow on the flames in an attempt to blow the fire out. Of course the flames blew up in his face and he went into a panic. I started laughing my ... off and walked over to my bike and flipped the lid shut on the tank. Instantly the fire was out and he got all ...... off at me for laughing at him. I told him " Don't do stupid **** and I wont laugh at you".
Keep in mind if fuel has no oxygen, it will not burn easily.
