Hello all, I am new to the forum and to vaping but I will give you a bit of my back story before my question.

I was at about 1 to 1 1/2 PAD smoker and started having chest pains and breathing problems. I had been smoking about 23 or 24 years. I thought if I switched to something new it might help, so a couple years ago I switched to chewing Copenhagen wintergreen long cut. It worked for a while until I started smoking again. So for the last couple of years I smoked at home and chewed at work. About a half can to a full can a day and 1/2 pack of smokes. I Still would occasionally get chest pains and hard breathing but not near as often or as bad. It wasn't until a couple weeks ago that I went on a small vacation with the family to San Antonio TX and met a few people who had some pretty high tech mods and pretty good tasting juice that I thought about getting into it. When we returned home I looked up local vape shops and bought a smok OSUB TC 80W, 6mg strawberry cheesecake juice, and a large beast tank.

Now to today after 1 week of vaping and my questions. I am constantly vaping, nearly nonstop, my lungs seem sore and full, kinda like I am back on 1 1/2 packs a day. I like it a lot but decided today that I needed to make a concsious effort to not chain vape. Is chain vaping bad? Are the feelings in my lungs normal for a new vapor? I have quite smoking in the past for over a year and don't remembers my lungs feeling this way as I recovered from smoking.

Now to the Mods..... I am a technology junky. I love my smart phones, my tablets and iPads, super cool overly complicated remote controls. I know vaping is suppose to be a tool to quit smoking and eventually vaping but how is this remotely possible with all the super cool mods and rebuildable tanks out there? I am already looking at a new smok alien or something with Bluetooth. How do you guys handle all of this?

No your symptoms aren't normal or good - something's not working for you. I suggest a change to a mouth to lung tank tank like the Nautilus 2, lower power 8-12 W or so, higher nic 18-24 mg so you only have to vape a few ml a day, and perhaps higher pg like 70pg 30vg. One of the most common complaints of folks with lungs damaged from smoking is wheezing and a tight chest with high VG juice. The less ejuice you consume the better. Good luck!

Like said before, lower your wattage and raise the nic of your juice. Most of us quit smoking cigs on 18-24nic juice using clearo's or protanks and other higher ohm coils(1.5-2.2ohm). Once you've mastered technique of the vape then begin to proceed to broaden into getting lower ohm coils. Lots do succeed with low ohm coils and high wattage hitters right off the bat but its a rough ride until your body gets use to not smoking. Its quite a juice investment to keep thirsty atty filled especially if your vaping a nic level thats too low and not satisfying your need. Nothing wrong with your OSUB TC 80W hitter, just get a different more beginner type atty that takes higher ohm coils and 18nic juice to kick the smokes first then after kicked you can begin to cloud chase if thats what your wanting to do.

+1 to what @David Wolf posted. I smoked for 40 years, about 1.5 PAD for the last 10 or so and the only time my lungs have felt "heavy" from vaping is when the vg ratio was too high. That's just me though. Every. body. is. different.

I'm beginning to feel a little fortunate for not having so many choices when I started vaping five years ago. I was just trying to quit smoking, "clouds" were what happened when you exhaled. All I had to do was find the right combo to address my nicotine cravings. This is "Binky," the set-up that I settled on for several months:

littlevaper.jpg

It's a JoyeTech 650mAh regulated eGo, topped with a carto tank at probably 1.7Ω. The old JoyeTech eGos were regulated at around 3.2 to 3.4 volts, so you can imagine the power - or maybe not. I also used the eGo to direct drip with an LR306 atty. The "LR" stood for "low resistance," which at the time was about 1.5Ω. Anyway, the power...with the equipment I had I couldn't have gotten over 8 watts with a gun to my head and I quit smoking just fine.

I picked 12mg nicotine to start with. I picked it because it seemed to be in the middle and I had no one to ask. I did this all on my own - with help from youtube. I'm forever grateful to Dollingitup and Dr. Vapor. Since I chain smoked, I figured my lungs were toast anyway and I chain vaped from the start. Heavy duty. I still do. Currently my ADV is 10mg nic, 70%pg/30%vg. The only real side effect I have from chain vaping with pg that high is dry mouth.

Anyway, I'm rambling here and probably not being helpful. My point is that if you aren't satisfied with your vape, experiment with toppers and juice before you chuck everything out and buy all new gear. Cloud chasing can be fun, I build coils and have 0mg nic/90%vg juice for giggles, but I never would have quit smoking if that style had been the only option or the most popular option. Bottom-line is that I am a nicotine addict and I vape as a less harmful way to address my addiction than to smoke cigarettes. My advice is to find a set-up that helps you quit, then chain vape while you shop online for toys.

I'd DEFINITELY increase the nic level.
As for the rest of it? Well...
Do what works for YOU.
After almost five years of vaping I still use 24mg/ml juice, in a mild (0.4 ohm 50-60w) sub-ohm rig, and I have no plans to change that, or stop vaping at this point.
If you're into gadgets, or DIY vaping can be an enjoyable hobby. It isn't (or shouldn't be IMHO) just about getting off of the cigarettes, dropping the nicotine, and then quitting vaping as quickly as possible. If that's what you want to do fine, but
I think that the biggest mistake many vapers make is trying to rush the process. Just thinking about it as a smoking cessation aid locks in a certain way of thinking about it that can be counter productive.
Life is a journey, not a destination. Might as well enjoy the ride.

@bobwho77 has a point. I didn't start vaping to quit smoking (I thought it was a scam), I got an e-cig to play with out of curiosity. I just tried it and never smoked again. I've met many other "accidental" quitters. I didn't mean to say you shouldn't have fun with it, I was more thinking of when people get caught up in finding the "perfect vape" and go through lots of gear without seriously trying what they already have.

All the above is sound advice. A higher nic juice will certainly help a lot. When I started with actual vaping, not a cigalike, I used 24 mg nic for the first ~6 months. I would only see one issue for you and that's the tank you got is an excellent tank, but it doesn't do well with a very high nic juice or low airflow. Tanks are relatively inexpensive (it's the coils that kill you). Something like the new Nautilus or the older, but my preferred Triton mini, or the new Smok spirals with mtl coils or several others would be better starting out. All will work just fine on the mod you have.

On another note. I know issues of chest pains and shortness of breath go back in time for you, but especially being a smoker, have you had that checked out by your doctor to make sure there's nothing serious underlying that? Those a significant symptoms for anyone, let alone a smoker, to have.

I also believe less juice consumed is better even if it has more nic. I see alot of this because with such low nic, people are vaping massive amounts of juice to satisfy their nic craving. The problem though can be that if one increases their nic and still do massive direct lung inhales, they get nic sick and dizzy. So in order to consume less juice and increase the nic, so you vape less, one kind of needs to go from direct lung to mtl and change from a sub tank to a mtl set up. I would keep your current set up but also buy a mtl set up with higher nic and see what happens. As for vg/pg ratios, I think even with today's mtl set ups, one can still vape upwards of 70vg.

Agree with most of what you said but having read many comments in the forum from those with COPD, asthma and other lung problems I would say The large majority don't do well with VG any higher than 30%. I'm in that group and vape 80% PG/20%VG and that works well for me. I do on ocassion see a comment that high VG works best for someone in that category but that's a small minority and the gentleman is almost certainly vaping high VG (most juice is these days) so I suggest he go to higher PG and see how that works.
What does not work for those with lung issues who start doing worse going from smoking to vaping are well intentioned advice like "hang in there it takes a while". No. My lungs improved within a week of stopping smoking and starting vaping and fortunately at the time 18-36 mg nic at 70PG/30VG was common. Trying 50/50 and higher VG later I realized VG gives me tight lungs and makes me wheezy and I would on ocassion cough up mucousy glycerin lol. I've read many similar comments. If vaping makes someones lungs worse than smoking then your body is telling you this isn't working and it's time to listen and try something different.
Of course OP should see a doctor, however I think it's likely he sees one regularly.

I can see your point for sure and because you have seen more about this particular vg issue, then I can't disagree. What my point was , is that going from 6mg to potentially 18 or 24mg in a mtl tank can obviously be stronger and going higher in pg at the same time might just be a bit to much. Keeping a slightly higher vg will lessen TH a little while showing at least some cloudage that they were getting before.
