Hi I'm Michael Boyette. My Aunt just committed suicide. Chantix is the reason why she was able to complete this horrific act upon herself. I am left to clean up the mess. Do not take Chantix.
Swear to GOD I tried to OFF myself on a wonderful family vacation in the Caribbean! I was on that .... 10-15 years ago!!
Called my Dr who prescribed it and he said stop taking it you’ll feel better!! REALLY WHEN... I wanted to be locked up but I had two kids to entertain at the beach!
    STAY AWAY!

I took Chantix one time only. It didn't agree with me, I almost put my fist through a fish tank. It caused very intense emotional reactions to nonrmally non-threatening things. Terror, mania, suicidal intentions, burning rage, it was not a good day. My dad had no problems at all with it though. I'm sorry for your loss.

I doubt that the Chantix is to blame. She was no doubt close to the edge in any case. You should put the responsibility where it belongs, on her.

But what's bad for the other smoking-cessation products is good for us
Chantix is well-known to have a side effect that produces suicidal ideation in people that never considered it otherwise and did not suffer from mental illness and the rates go much higher on individuals that have had past mental health issues. It is a well-documented side effect and the death rate related to Chantix suicide and the other antidepressants that are used to help people quit smoking is much higher than the current lung illness death rate which of course we know is not related to nicotine vaping but still. When I was seeking a doctor's assistance to quit smoking this is one of the reasons he told me he does not prescribe what amounts to antidepressants to people who aren't depressed simply because they smoke cigarettes. It's really not that far-fetched if you think about it this is an antidepressant used to change the chemical makeup in the brain and when used for a person who is depressed that is an appropriate thing to do but if a person is not depressed changing the chemicals of the brain can have some very bad side effects including creating a near psychotic state in which a person may feel like they need to die. If you go to the page you'll see it listed as a side effect

I tried Wellbutrin years ago (also an antidepressant) to quit smoking years ago. It made me feel "high", which wouldn't have been a problem if I didn't work in surgery. :w00t:

A coworker tried Chantix and experienced the terrible nightmares. He'd awaken in a cold sweat after dreaming of chasing his wife and daughter around the house with a butcher knife with intent to kill. That lasted just one night. Still smoking to this day as far as I know.

My ex wife tried Chantix to quit smoking. She's a cop, and I said you're the last person that should be on Chantix. She's still smoking, too.

As part of my on-off-on 25yr struggle to quit what was eventually a 55yr habit, I read that the FAA in US had approved Chantix (Champix outside US ) to help flight crews quit smoking, after all, it was FDA approved. I suggested this to my family doc who shook her head and said no.
Later when feedback reports of depression/unprovoked anger/suicides/suicidal thoughts, etc came around, the FAA withdrew approval. I was lucky to dodge that bullet I reckon.
Then vaping came along and saved my ..... Six yrs down the line and still quit, Yippee !

My deepest condolences for your loss. I totally understand. In 1985 my favorite uncle and a great cousin both completed suicide (the suicides were not related and happened a few months apart) and then dad died from cancer and emphysema that same year of which his doctors told me was a direct cause of smoking all his life.

I tried Chantix a few times. It just never lasted for me and while I have very vivid dreams anyway, the Chantix messed me up pretty bad with the dreams and how it interfered with my other meds that were actually working.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry. Chantix is pretty evil. All the hate and lawsuits the lawyers are gathering up for Juul should be directed toward Chantix. In my opinion it was only put and allowed to stay on the market because it is a harm reduction product. The FDA doesn't seem to care much about addiction or so it appears to me.

It says a lot (I was a 2-3 ppd smoker) even by the end, when I was about to be dx with COPD (I am super bipolar I) every one of my docs said, "Anna even if you keep smoking you will live longer than on Chantix."

    Ugh.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    Sorry for your loss.

We have been brainwashed to believe that it's acceptable to risk our lives/well-being, or that of others, to quit smoking cigarettes. ???

Not everyone who smokes cigs dies from it. I'll take my chances rather than take some pill that could make me kill myself/others or leave me an emotional wreck for the rest of my life.

*I* haven't been brainwashed into it,. I did almost quit smoking involulntarily my first time on wellbutrin (for depression.) I kind of pushed through thinking, "Well I can quit next winter." I took it every winter for a while.

The effect is weaker every time so if WB is for you and working, dont' take it for granted woudl be my advice.

It's relatively harmless although it can make subseptible folks rather speedy at tiimes in which case you should stop.

I worked with a guy who claimed he went on Wellbutrin to quit smoking. He said after a couple of weeks he felt disgusted to smoke. Couldn't even think about touching a cigarette.

But he got off them (can't remember why) and went right back to smoking instantly.
