If you're looking for a new wick type in the cotton area, give cheesecloth a try. I recently switched and it's been amazing. Although I've had some issues I think I have it worked out now.
If you're using a top fed clearo and it's flooding right after you put your cheesecloth threads into it, give it overnight to cure. I've noticed it doesn't flood or give the gurglies after having a solid 8-10 hours to impregnate all the threads with oil so they swell.
Also it's better to pull the threads apart and put them into a bundle instead of just rolloing the cheesecloth fabric up and using it.
Just some experiences I thought I'd share because I'm infatuated with the performance of cheesecloth wick. So much more forgiving then rolled cotton balls, and tastes better too.
