What difference does it make how close a cigarette store is to a school since kids aren't allowed to buy cigarettes? How many liquor stores are within 500 feet of a school? Why get rid of menthol cigarettes? What about menthol cigars? How about cherry? apple? licorice? Doesn't the city of Chicago have more pressing things to spend their time and energy worrying about? What proof do they have that e-cigarettes hurt anyone? I definitely think every smoker, non-smoker, & vaper in Chicago needs to make a stand or it will be your soda and candy bars next. Wait, didn't Illinois already slap a sin tax on candy?

If you are caught smoking where you shouldn't in Illinois, you can be fined from $100 to $250. Of course Chicago wants their monies! I am glad I moved out of Illinois.

The "fine" for smoking at the local train station here is also $250 a pop. The transit cops lurk behind the vending machines, then pounce on anyone who lights up anywhere on the property while their bus is on a layover. A smoker would have to walk over a block to be "on the street", and would probably miss their bus.

Easy money, not sure who profits from this, but its enough to justify a whole group of "security guards" on the premises. They don't stop the legions of panhandlers who sweep through the area, they seem to be fixated on those $250 smoking tickets from people who might actually pay the "fine" to avoid a collection action and credit hit ...

I cheerfully stealth vape right in front of them ... :D

I am so glad I finally moved out of the Chicago tax net! The whole state pays for Chicago's blundering, corruption and spending. I always hated running out of smokes when I was working downtown and paying $10 for a pack when they were less than $5 in Naperville where I lived. I avoided Cook Co. as much as possible.

This is all about the tax $$. I remember that they tried to pass a law banning people from the burbs from bringing in cartons of smokes because they were 1/2 the price. It failed.

Does anyone have any idea where this stands? I've been all over the City of Chicago website and cannot find anything resembling an agenda for city council meetings.

Even though it had been reported that an ordinance was going to be proposed, it was never introduced at the meeting. As of now, we have no news about whether an ordinance will be proposed and, if so, when.

Fortunately, Chicago has an extraordinarily active local vape group--Windy City Vapers--and they're actively monitoring. :)

Thanks, JustJulie, for the information.

Sadly, I live in the Peoples Republic of Evanston, and not Chicago, and thus have no voice in the matter. The PRE is the first suburb immediately north of Chicago, and their new ordinance equating vaping with smoking may have inspired that nine-fingered Mussolini who rules Chicago.

Immediate attention required, folks. Chicago is following the same dirty tricks as New York City and Los Angeles . . . failing to give adequate notice in an effort to eliminate opposition.

We haven't been able to confirm all the details, but it appears likely an ordinance could be introduced as early as Monday, 12/9/13. We need vapers to call and email and let them know that we oppose treating e-cigarettes like smoking.

Adults would be prohibited from smoking e-cigarettes in virtually all of indoor Chicago except private homes and vehicles, hotel rooms designated for smoking.......

I'm rather curious how they think they will enforce that. Would the general public allow cameras in bathrooms and hotel rooms just to catch an errant vaper?

My hypothesis is that since they don't know squat about ecigs, really, they probably think they smell like tobacco cigarettes, require ashtrays like tobacco cigarettes, and leave that lasting odor wherever used like tobacco cigarettes. They don't realize ecigs do none of the above, and won't we have the last laugh!
