I saw that WGN TV segment last night (don't know why we get a Chicago TV station here in Pittsburgh, but I occasionally tune in to watch the Cubs lose).

Mermelstein (in previous comments in a news article announcing her getting the huge federal grant, and in the WGN segment) hasn't said anything positive about e-cigs, but instead repeats fear mongering claims by e-cig opponents (which is probably why she got the federal grant).

Interestingly, when I clicked on the WGN news segment, an advertisement by an e-cigarette company appeared across to top.

Kinda-sorta off topic ...
However, I suggest "young adults" were responsible
for kicking off the e-cig movement AND the "young adults"
will play a major roll with success in the face of all those
opposed to e-smoking.

Why ?? ... Young adults have found the electronic smoking experience
not only to be healthy ... but fascinating. They ain't going to put-up
with "Mommie Government" telling them they can't e-smoke anywhere
they want ... Like telling the "young adults" they can't talk on their cell
and Facebook while walking on the street ...
AIN'T GOING TO FLY !!
:p

Am I the only e-cigarette user that was actively looking for a product that would deliver nicotine more effectively than NRTs that I could use as a substitute for smoking?

E-cigarettes didn't find me. I went looking for them, and found the electronic cigar in 2007. Next, the e-cigar vendor contacted me and told me they were coming out with a cigarette version, which thrilled me. Back then I was a young adult of 61 years.

I suggest "most" smokers who found e-cigarettes
were Not actively looking for a nicotine substitute.

I found e-cigarettes by accident when I clicked on a link while surfing the Net.
Back when the only place to buy an e-cig was on the Net.
I saw a video and said to myself ...
Wow ... I can quit smoking and continue the smoking habit !!

I suggest many smokers today find e-cigs when they are introduced to them
by a vaper or see them in stores and decide to give one a test-drive.
I'm sure many heard about them and did a Google or a YouTube search.

Today ... E-cigs are no big secret anymore
Thanks to them being advertised on TV.

Just my 2 Cents

I wasn't actively looking for an alternate source of nicotine delivery when I accidentally stumbled across e-cigarettes at a vendor booth at a home show in 2010, but I always knew if someone came up with an alternate delivery system I would jump on board. And I'm so glad i did!

I must be a teenager if you're a "young adult."

Considering that vaping uptake seems to be an exponential curve, in any given year the majority of vapers will be new vapers as of that year.

So times, and information flow, change.

No. I had already quit for 2 years using a pipe (and went back to cigarettes because of Wellbutrin). I knew switching would work. While I didn't care about NRT, I was actually wanting to get off nicotine, I was looking for a substitute.
I think I discovered ecigs from an internet ad, possibly I saw a news/PBS clip about them and searched them at one point which triggered the targeted ad, so they did kind of find me in '09.

Pipes were a PITA and hard on the mouth. The nicotine delivery was there but those two issues kept me from being ready to try switching again.
In '09 ecigs weren't good and not much better as far as PITA. When I saw true tanks had come out I came back. Still somewhat of a PITA but now that I have 18650 mods and tanks that can hold a day of liquid the PITA factor has gone away. Even the original 1ml/18hr ecigs I came back to aren't that bad when they're not getting constant use.
The better ecig was something I had to find (although that did kind of find me too because of a Youtube spammer that got me looking to see what was new).
