So anyway I started believing in Jesus and God again because I actually read the New Testament other than the Gospels and started attending a non-denominational Christian church that emphasizes Bible study and strict adherence to Jesus' teachings based on the Gospels and Letters. The greatest difference I notice is that the Christians I met at this Church are hardcore and really believe and try to live a Christian life - in contrast, the Catholics I've met throughout my life (went to Catholic schools for 12 years) at several Churches were lukewarm Christians who went to Church but didn't really follow Jesus' teachings in their daily lives and many of my Catholic friends have stopped going to church and several have become atheists. Also, I realized that the Catholic priests and teachers practically ignored the New Testament letters and the history of early Christianity, emphasizing Catholic tradition more than the Bible. It was really a shock for me how much Catholicism deviates from both Jesus' teachings (Jesus said to not call anyone Father except for God while Catholics refer to priests with the title, "Father") and the content of the Bible (there's nothing in the Bible that warrants worshipping Mary or Saints/The Letters specificailly prohibit forming doctrine outside of Jesus' teachings).

Got to love that Bible

Kill Women Who Are Not Virgins On Their Wedding Night

But if this charge is true (that she wasn't a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)

Are you truely a Christian? Or just following the parts of the Bible you WANT to follow?

Jesus taught against judging others based on their sins - he came to save sinners. That's the main difference between the New Testament and the Old Testament. Jesus was the Messiah God sent to earth to save sinners and the Gentiles - the Old Testament is the establishment of Israel to produce the Messiah. Sure it's full of genocide and violence - but the reason was to establish monotheism through a relationship with the Israelites (God is practical and his foolishness is still superior to human wisdom). To judge the Bible according to human wisdom is also specifically addressed in both the Old and New Testament - if God came down to earth and told you to kill someone because he commands it, you wouldn't do so because you think it's wrong? If God is all-powerful, and all-knowing, and created everything, how can you interpet his ways? This is the way to understand the contradictions If you read the Bible you'll see how Jesus represents the personal relationship of God with us while the Old Testament is more of the preparation for the rise of monotheism and Jesus through the relationship with the Israelites (which they broke through their sins and which is itself mentioned in the Old Testament). The teachings of Jesus are contradictory with the Old Testament in several instances - because his mission was to spread God's message to the Gentiles and to establish a new relationship in which God is no longer a ruthless tyrant but a savior for all.

Jesus Definantly has a way with words...I hope this isn't Jesus representing the personal relationship of god with us!

Matthew 10:34-37 (King James Version)

34Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

36And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Yes it is. So you would rather love a person over God who created that person? I'm not going to argue with you or any other people who are trying to debate my beliefs. Go to the religion thread for that - this topic is regarding Christianity vs Catholicism. I was an atheist not less than a month ago - what changed me was that the Bible is supported by overwhelming archaelogical and historical proof by third parties - including those of the Roman Empire, an empire which initially based their beliefs and culture on Greek humanism but soon replaced it with Christianity because of the message of Salvation which addressed its many social injustices and the miracles performed by Jesus and his disciples which were witnessed by tens of thousands of initially non-believing pagans and humanists.

i was a catholic who is now an atheist and i think the problem with catholicism is its too old school for younger people to get into...if they want to keep their numbers up, it might be time to be more appealing to a younger audience...the latin, kneeling, standing, kneeling again and the old school feeling of it makes it quite boring and easy to start questioning your faith (for me and others i know in my age group, at least)

i would say that IMHO, catholics lose faith alot more often and alot easier than any other denomination

Hi - Good thread idea -
    I was also subjected to Catholic School - 14 years - Pre-12
I never really bought much of it - Even at 4 years old it made no sense -
I do think that the teaching attributed to Jesus - Love and Peace - Are very valuable teachings -
I also think it is important to understand the origins of the Christ Story -
This in no way changes the message of the words attributed to him - However -
You must practice with this truth in mind - Jesus most likely never actually existed -
His personification is a retelling of astrologically based metaphorical myths as a vehicle for the message -
Man has the power of love within himself and created this story to express it -
There is also nothing in the Bible that tells you to worship Jesus - That comes from the Church -

YouTube - Real Proof that Jesus was NOT real

Sigh.......It doesn't matter how much I think about it ...I can't really comprehend how anyone 'believes' in anything without any kind of factual proof. The most they could possibly do is think it 'might' be true and because of that not one of them should ever be talking as if they 'know' it is true and it's all facts.

Gashin, Im so happy to hear this! Even though I go to a baptist church, I believe the most important part is reading the Bible yourself and especially Jesus' teachings.. I have a Catholic friend who believes they must earn their way to heaven and another Catholic friend who is told not to read their Bible but to only listen to what the priest says on Sundays..How can anyone know what the Bible really says if they aren't allowed to read it?

Are you still checking out the Harvest Family website videos sometimes? Good to hear from you..take care

    Interesting Thread.....
I consider myself a "Recovering Catholic". Now all I need to do is find the 12 step program that's appplicable to this!!! LOL!!
I did the 12 years of Catholic shcool like you did gashin, and always wondered why the priests and nuns couldn't answer some of the very basic questions that I asked. After all... I could find most of the answers in the Bible. Then I found out that a goodly portion of the doctrin they practice was created by Man.... not God.... and NOT in the Bible!!
Another one of those things that make you go "Hmmmm".:D

So glad we finally started another religion thread.....................the old one wasn't annoying enough. Go to church......or to the church forum. We don't need to pray on the internet or in schools.

Okay I will contribute to this thread while I'm here. I am so glad I now have a way to smoke in church without being judged. Let me hear you're close minded judgemental thoughts.
