So, who gets em?

The company I work for has always handed out bonus checks. Often, these are issued too late to use for Christmas shopping (at least the way I prefer to do so ... if you're reading this, you understand). I'm still waiting to see it this year.

So, if you get a Christmas bonus, when is it issued?

Christmas perks have dwindled away since the 70s and 80s. My company used to put us up in a fancy hotel in Atlanta and have a huge Christmas party for employees and spouses/partners on a Saturday night, complete with an open bar, steak dinner, dessert cart, and a good band and a hardwood dance floor. When it was over, we'd hit the elevator and go up to our rooms.

By the late 90s that turned into a lunch at a local buffet and a key ring or some sort of trinket. In good years, we got a $25 gift card. Times got much tighter over the years. We understood and just appreciated our jobs. The money they spent in the fat years would have been better banked instead of squandered on parties. When the stock was $150 a share, times were good. Then it fell to $12 and the company was pinching pennies.

Nothing where I work. All the sales guys have to work every single Holiday & actually double our workload so Office staff, management & wharehouse personnel can get the day off. Also we must visit every customer whether they need product or not.

I was in the technical end of the business. I always worked right up to and including Christmas Eve to get in on the office parties in my accounts. There were breakfast goodies in the morning, lunch dishes from home in the middle of the day, and homemade snacks in the afternoon. In the early afternoon, I'd head to the house and take off early with my blackberry monitoring calls. Anything that came in after lunch usually had a request for the next work day after Christmas. That would be my usual vacation week, anyway. I didn't mind working Christmas week, especially if I could manage to get the week off between Christmas and New Year's.

Thanks for the comments. My (modest, ain't like it used to be) bonus finally came in today. It used to go towards Christmas but it's impractical at this late date. It came so late I had just about convinced myself it was a thing of the past. I'm thankful for any bonus having read the posts above.

We used to get 2 weeks of pay as our bonus. We had a massive recall in 2007 that ended it for us little employees but the supervisors still get their thousands. Most of them don't deserve it. Nothing but overpaid babysitters that couldn't run a machine to save their life. We got bought out this year and it was mentioned that "maybe" next year they will give us something. Pfffttt...I won't hold my breath.

There was a time when corporate and small businesses were able to make nice profits. If you look at Walmart, you'll find profits of $5B a year that used to be spread among small business for the most part. I wonder what kind of Christmas bonuses they are giving this year? An article I read said that through the 3rd Qtr they had only earned $3.34B through the 3rd quarter compared to $3.44B last year. I guess they are having a bad year. ;)
