If you smoked at all and you die, it is a smoking death? There's still a lot of us old people around (WWII and Baby Boomers) who smoked and quit one way or another. That figure may not go down until we're all gone.
In the mid part of the last century roughly 45% of the population smoked.
Now its 17%. I realize one has to adjust for population growth. It just seems to me
480000 has been a constant for too long.

Mike

My question is why should 17% of the population pay extra (sin) taxes, that benefit 100% of the population?
I suspect its to pay all the benefits for the new children's disease dejure.
Autism. Its reached epidemic proportions in the states that opted in for
the federal entitlement. Similar to what happened with ADHD .

What has been bothering me is if smoking rates are going down, why does this figure remain
the same?

I think the explanation would be that the diseases 'caused' from smoking take time / long while to play out, and thus the estimate of 480K is probably going to be held as accurate even if rates went to zero percent this year.

I honestly think this is what B. Godshall believes, and possibly could explain.

My take is even if it were at zero percent starting this year and for next 50 years, for the first 20 years of that time frame, anti-smoking advocates would stick to the 480K number. Possibly longer depending on the zealousness of such an anti-type.

Well, since SHS is lethal and can't be contained, and you get third hand and even fourth hand exposure, one single smoker can potentially kill hundreds of thousands in their lifetime... </SARCASM>

.....Even if the second hand smokers die at 89..... </MORE SARCASM>

A former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt died recently, age 96. Apparently he smoked to the end and declined an ecig when offered.

At the moment the best argument I make for switching is that with a bit of learning you can vape for $100 a year, basically go on smokding for free. Smokers are good at shrugging off the health issues. It's easier to imagine how you would spend the money saved. My brother just started an older woman vaping who lives hand to mouth in a rural area and smokes heavily. What she's most excited about is saving money to pay her other bills. Taxing smoking or vaping is just plain cruel.

Let me tell you why.
I don't know if you guys are aware of FSC they added around 2004-2006 in cigarettes.
Since then, cigarettes contain few chemicals such as carpet glue and what not that makes the cigarettes twice as more toxic.
So even if the percentage went down, people die faster I'd assume Lol.

IDK, just my speculation.
Don't flame me.

I think you are skewing those numbers. It's more like millions. A single smoker can wipe out an entire species.

I agree. It's a shame. Especially for those who can't afford to go back to smoking.

Cigarettes are available 24/7 on every street corner in America and that makes it harder to quit. If vaping and cigs were banned and I couldn't buy either one I could quit them both easily. When I was still smoking I favored banning the sale of rolled cigarettes, make everybody roll their own. That would cut down consumption. WIth ecigs it gets much easier, Most people would get one for convenience then discover that when they're vaping they only need to roll a few cigs a day and after some weeks or months they would give up on the rolled cigs and stop smoking.
