Please let us know what exactly you are using; ejuice, nic level, pg/vg content, and battery + delivery device names.

I have NEVER coughed while vaping.......well, once or twice, using either icky eliquid or wrong settings on my equipment

Can't really help you tweak your setup if we have no idea what it is ---- there's at least 4-10 things it "could" be. LOL

My brother has this same issue. I have tried to get him on the vaping bandwagon but he just can't seem to handle it. I've given him my beginner setups (MVP/Nautilus Mini) and it causes him to cough almost immediately. I also let him sample my rebuildables and he coughs almost as soon as he begins to pull (I'm mainly a tootlepuffer BTW). Its like he is about to cough up a lung. I'm sorry to say this but its hilarious when it happens. I would really like for him to kick the habit. He vapes what I Vape 12mg strength. My only thought as to why this is happening is that the nicotine is to strong and suggested he try a lower nicotine strength. I'm anxious to hear possible causes in this thread because I would really like to see him put those stink sticks down.

It's the irritation in the lungs from smoking--any moisture, even steam from a warm drink like coffee, will cause the coughing fits. I was that way when I first started vaping, too. I was truly surprised at how quickly I would go into a meltdown after inhaling just the slightest bit of vapor. But I knew that it happened with warm drinks, too, not just vaping, and I also remembered that it didn't happen when I was younger. So, I worked on cutting out the smokes. It was only after about a week of zero cigarettes, that I could tolerate vaping without nearly breaking a rib. To this day, however, I cannot tolerate very warm vapor without coughing.

Best advice I can give you is:

Change the way you inhale. A lot of cigarette smokers drag directly into the lungs.

Try this: Inhale from your e-cig, then hold the vapor in your mouth for 5 seconds. THEN inhale into your lungs. It will be much smoother this way.

You can actually see P Busardo using this technique on many of his early juice reviews. He nods his head and counts before inhaling.

After awhile it will become second nature for you.

The other thing you can do is try juice that has higher VG content.

Hope that helps.

I would suggest a variable temp ( VT ) e-cig. just got my first e-cig this past Monday and it started off having a little harsh like coughing and choking so I played with the temp on my mod since it's a VT e-cig and I started at a very low temp and kept vaping daily/throughout the days and now I don't have that choking or coughing issue. I am now slowly raising my wattage because the temp was so low. as zapped said as well holding it in my mouth then inhaling into lungs helped. vaping imo is nothing like smoking real cigs they have different feelings as I still smoke 1-2 cigs a day and I have no issues with the harshness of a cig compared to the first few vapes.

im using a 6mg nicotine juice as I no longer smoke a lot but I found a chart online saying like 6mg = 8-10 cigs a day 12mg = 1 pack a day ( not correct im making numbers up but that's an example; not sure if this chart was even accurate ). I don't know of any soft set ups. am currently using the joyetech evic VT 60w however I've been hearing a lot of issues on it ( has yet to happen to me yet might simply just be the supplier; bought mines at myvaporshop.com had no issues when unpacking or anything and shipping was great not sure about other sites or local shops)

I am attempting to switch to e-cigs but can't find anything that suits me. Regular cigs don't make me cough or choke but vaping does.

Any advice on a soft set-up for a new user that needs high nicotine intake?

If you're vaping for the first time, then that coughing is normal, it's just that you are not used to the wonderful tasty delicious vapor :)

Ciggs made me cough when I first started smoking, and vaper made me cough when I first started, and still does if I dont vape for a long time, then hit a friends ecigg for a taste.

5-8 watts was a good setting for me when I started back the last time, and you will notice your tolerance increasing.
Just having to smoke outside (my own rules) was enough to push me toward the ecigg, I start out with 36mg ejuice (24mg for wife), and after about a month I am taking bigger hits and ready to start cutting down the nicotine.
If you get some good flavors you enjoy and a decent starter kit, you wont have any trouble getting off the anologs!
There is a thread going about the setup I started with which I think is ideal, and I still use it at home.

Help needed identifying new Clearo. | E-Cigarette Forum

I personally chose the istick 30 to power that tank, and have been very happy with it, both from the beginning and even now as I raise the voltage a tad bit to provide a stronger hit.
There are several other options as well, this is just one of many good solutions IMHO.

When you first began smoking, you probably coughed and felt that the smoke seemed harsh. This is normal. It certainly didn't make you stop smoking, did it? That phase passed.

When you first begin vaping, its new to your body and you may cough. Like with smoking, your body will adapt to vaping. Do the mouth to lung inhale technique that Zapped suggested. Do slow gentle drags. A word on vaping technique

If that doesn't help: Use higher resistance coils (higher ohms) in your tanks for a cooler vape. If using variable voltage/wattage, set the settings at a lower power output. Try to use the lowest nicotine concentration as you can. Try a higher Vg amount in your Pg/Vg ratio in your e-liquids.
