Much larger mass because the core wire is wrapped with a smaller wire. Need more power to heat. More surface area to create denser vapor, and IMO better flavor. I definitely prefer them on a regulated mod though because I find I want more than 4.2v to power them. I don't have a mechanical series mod though, or I may have a different opinion on that.

I just got a subvod/toptank nano "kit". When I look at SSOCC coils on the website I got it from, they offer 0.5 ohm coils and 0.5 ohm Clapton coils. What is the deal with clapton coils? How are they different?

They are a wick "within a wick" meaning you cant get a more efficient wick, they thrive on high power or a better analogy ............... Holley 0-80924HB 1400 CFM 2 x 4 Gen 3 Dominator Carburetor - Holley Performance Products
spaced coil - 18 miles per gallon
micro - 14 mpg
clapton - 7 mpg

I was skeptical that claptons were just another vape gimmick. I didn't bother much with them and continued to vape happy with my single spaced coils. I got a couple TFV4's that had a clapton already installed so instead of trashing them like I do with all stock coils, I'd thought I'd see if the hype was true. What a vape it is, those claptons vape great but they are juice hogs(DIY my own juice so its no biggie). I now build my own claptons and added another stepping stone to my quest for the best possible vape.

My first claptons were big ol 3.5 and 4mm honkers and they just got too hot and took too much time to heat up. I was ready to write them off but then I tried going smaller and hit the nail on the head with 4 wraps around 2.5mm and they perform better then a 22g 3mm coil in some case`s, and the heat is negligible. The only problem Iv had is with RDA`s that use long legs (Aeolus) and then the heat up time is negatively affected, I`ll probably go back to a simple coil on that one. But I have the 2.5mm coils in a MutX and it`s dense, white out dense. And the flavor is brighter, with more nuances.

Like most everything in vaping, you have to try it for yourself, and see how you like it.

Yea, i'm not seeing the hype at all with clapton wire.. just got some and i'm not impressed at all, Built a .3ohm dual coil popped all over the place..straight drank like 2ml of juice in a few puffs lol but yet somehow produces the worst clouds ever, get better ones from just 24g.. threw it out right away. rebuilt another around .25ohms.. no popping, huge ramp up, wispy clouds..not impressed in the least with the flavor either.. VERY dissapointed..

I have dual 28/32 Claptons in my Velocity mini at 70-80 watts and its a fog machine, but not an all day setup. @MintyDripper, you are obviously not doing something right.

Ok, well making a coil is pretty standard.. I'm not doing something right? Can you elaborate on that, cause i'm pretty sure i know how to make and wick a coil..28/32 clapton 2.4mm 8wraps .32ohm at 70-90watts, nothing but wispy clouds. I didnt do anything different then you probly. Even at 100w the ramp up is horrible, and deff not chucking clouds like a standard build

Ugh unregulated series is the only type of mod I haven't used yet. One of these days tho, I'm looking at you noisey cricket.

More surface area per ohm.
The coil itself acts partially as wick.

One day we will see coil wire that has been shot with lasers to make holes in it so that it is porous wire.

Yours is performing badly, ergo you must be doing something wrong. Could be the way you are wicking it, I don't know.

It seems that wicking is crucial with claptons to get good performance. They seem to like it on the light side, but not so light they collapse quickly. Too much and they scorch too soon, too little and they scorch immediately. Its gotta be just right.
