If you're only interested in cleaning one or two now and then, the boil, rinse, repeat is good.

I wash mine after every second or third use (I have some two year old cartos still working like new), and I do 20-30 at a time, so it was worth it to make it a fast and easy process:

My current method.

1. Soak overnight in everclear (or high proof vodka)
2. Rinse with hot water
3. Boil rinse (repeat as needed 2-3 times)
4. Oven at 175 degrees for approx 1 hour - then remain in oven as it cools down
5. Let air dry for 2-3 days

I do 50+ at a time so only do this every month or two.

This is pretty close to how I do it but some flavors cinnamon is a great example will always linger. If you dont oven dry I get a kind of dirt flavor is the best way I can describe it my theory is the coils rust when wet and you pick up the flavor when you vape. But thats just my thoughts Ive never tore one open to prove or disprove.
Its easily avoidable with a oven dry.

Use the reverse Taryn spin to get all the old juice out of the carto, and fill it with the new juice flavor.

I tried this method SBR, and unfortunately my cat stepped right in front of the flight path, and well lets just say there was cat hair, and juice all over the place...

OP I dug up this old thread in case you are using horizontal bottom coil cartos. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ego-type-models/188388-how-clean-rebuild-gogo-cartomizer.html

I am truly sorry for your cat, but I understand why it happened. My dogs know to walk away when they see me start spinning. :p

I found a video on YouTube about using a baby syringe to flush the carto and then like 45 pumps to dry it. I got a baby syringe at a local drug store for $1.99. Have not tried the method yet, but looked fairly easy and the equipment needed is certainly cheap enough! Also showed to use an oral soft pick to swab the hole in the carto. I googled "how to clean a cartomizer" and that was one of the links. Sorry I don't have the link handy.
