Cleaning an Atomizer (Photo Evidence) A Way That Actually Works

Status
Not open for further replies.
The atomizers I use, and use again, and have no problem with scorch black ruining my vaping experience... are the PureSmoke brand. Keeping in mind, this is not a new atomizer, I have been researching and documenting daily diaries on four different atomizers since July, as I use them, maintain them, and rotate them.. photo-documenting and written documentation of every thing in detail.

From: Properly Cleaning an Atomizer
Staying (and Living) Smoke Free: Properly Cleaning an Atomizer

I don't like to think of it as "Cleaning" an atomizer, because when people tend to "clean," they tend to use abrasive detergents (and some on the web have actually suggested doing just that, everything from vinegar to mechanical oil -- what a mess, especially if you inhale either as a "vapor"), or, cleaning as in terms of abrasive scrubbing. There's suggestions on the web that will destroy an atomizer. I have been maintaining the atomizers and avoid altogether touching the heating element for fear of knocking it out.

Common household Isopropyl Alcohol is as abrasive as it gets and does wonders at breaking up oil and drying the oil out... leaving a dry residue on the heating element, that with a little dry heat, tends to break up, become dust and blown away while dragging.

If the residue blows away from the heating element... that's great, I'll consider myself lucky. But, if it doesn't... then I cut my losses and move on. Preventative maintenance is a far better word, than "cleaning".

Here's Atomizer #1 on August 12, 2010, directly after an isopropyl alcohol bath. It has not been dry-blown, and was untouched. Lots of black residue on the heating element.
atomizer_one_6477.jpg

After a minimal amount of dragging on a fairly dry cartridge, some of the residue is blown away and whiter material beneath begins to be revealed.
atomizer_one_6496.jpg

Another angle of Atomizer #1, as residue loosens up and blown off from dragging on a dry cartridge.
atomizer_one_6493.jpg

After some dragging through a dry cartridge, and the atomizer warmed up, some of the black residue has disappeared directly around the coils.
atomizer_one_6513.jpg
I'll put Atomizer #1 back in for one more isopropyl alcohol bath, and repeat the process of dry-blowing, see if that helps to further strip some of the baked on oils away from the heating element.

A Couple Hours Later...

atomizer_one_6554.jpg
Here's Atomizer One, after taking it from the alcohol bath. Residue remains heavy on the heating element.
atomizer_one_6558.jpg
Here's after dry-cartridge-blowing the atomizer a few times... heating up the element, and then cooling it, heating it up, and cooling it off... as shown, much of the black residue has been removed in one large area of the heating element.

atomizer_one_6564.jpg

In the following photo, there's heavy black residue at another angle.
atomizer_one_6577.jpg

After some further dragging on a dry-cartridge,
atomizer_one_6588.jpg

atomizer_one_6586.jpg

The residue loosened up and was blown off. The isopropyl alcohol did a pretty good job of drying out those oils, and with a little heat, the black stuff is turned to dust... clearing the atomizer of residue. Now, its easier to see the lighter material in the heating element, including the coils.

Following the cleaning..

I put a clean cartridge on the atomizer, to get the heating element moist. It's still possible to see the lighter material.

Staying (and Living) Smoke Free

During my discussion in the past about the atomizer which had been restored to like new condition, I was dealing with cartridges which began producing a heavy watery vapor -- with little to no nicotine/flavor in the vapor. The cartridge was mostly dry, and producing a watery vapor... the conditions were just right for "steam cleaning" the atomizer. See the post "Extending Life of an Atomizer". I haven't been able to replicate those conditions just yet, but certainly am interested in learning how it happened. I refer to this atomizer:

a used atomizer
used-atomizer-001.jpg

My luck was, when I began blogging about the experience and actually *thinking* about how I did it, day to day and to put everything into words.. I couldn't quite do it anymore, the same way. Now, isn't that the way life goes..

Nice pics.

The only way I found that works is to heat up the coil till it glows for a few seconds, or longer. Easiest done with a manual battery of course. And best done every few days or so rather than when deposits have become really bad. This 'ashes' the deposits so that they become whitish and subsequently fall off. There is a chance of the atty dieing when doing this but otherwise it works quite well.

Any pre-clean such as with ethanol to remove oils would help, before the 'dry burn'.

Nice observation! I remember that in the future, to explain why, the white. =)

What system are you using?

the first pics look gross. what kind of atty/carto is that?

I suppose you use yours for weeks and months, and they always come out looking snow white.

lulz

please tell me the brand you're selling so I can avoid it. I think its low when you begin attacking a product to try to desperately home in on business. The Ecig community has got to stick together against bigger fish like the FDA, with exception of squeezing out con-artist fraud brands like Smoking Everywhere, so take your criticism and your "products" and go elsewhere. It looks like an atomizer, from a product that actually is GUARANTEED NOT TO LEAK. Thanx.

Pinch me if I imagined that. DID THAT GUY REALLY ASK WHAT KIND OF CARTO THIS ATOMIZER IS? Please mister, tell me what brand you're selling...

P.S. folks, here's the same Atomizer, when it came from new from the pack. Oh my gee wiz, its soooo scary looking. :?: It looks like an atomizer. As if some people had never seen one under high magnification... especially one that was used for 8.5 days straight vaping in an experiment. lulz :p Never saw an atomizer magnified have you?
That's the only scary thing.

new_atomizer.jpg

She's a beauty.

I wonder after 204 hours continually exposed to a red-hot heating coil, how good critics like that would look himself? Hmmm?

BTW, I'm very proud of the research I'm doing, along with the SuperMacro feature on my Canon PowerShot S3IS and myself, don't appreciate those kind of comments.

After all, photographing magnified shots of an atomizer that measures,

atomizer_one_6273.jpg

in comparison to the size of a dime... but for those without knowledge of what they speak of, the atomizer looks much better when you can't actually see the fine details. Some here can handle those "frightening" realities.

Really like please, take your CRITICISM elswewhere Jack.

Just for laughs,

It's so gross, its scary. Please *quick* hand me a tissue for my tears...

A curious note here.

I've been running my experiments with four atomizers since July 2010.

I've done the alcohol-soaking nearly every day... I didn't heat-dry / turn the coils red hot to burn, every day. Last night I began doing something similar to what you're saying: doing it regularly before it builds up. That is, I use a dry cartridge and drag on it to heat the coils up, and the black stuff falls off. After a few minutes the atty is back to white again.

By doing so, keeping the atomizer residue-free, I've noticed a significant difference, that is, I haven't been refilling as many times (which would save money in the long run), and haven't been needing a new cartridge. (With the PureSmoke system, each pack contains 10 cartridges that are the size of a cigarette .... (contain the nicotine liquid) and an atomizer is packed inside. But I refill using a syringe.

I'm curious if you've noticed burning less nicotine liquid when your atomizer is maintained as virtually residue-free vs. build up of black baked on residue in it? Naturally... I know its common sense, but I've taken note of it today, during my diary on the atomizers... other days, I only cleaned the atty once a day... and the black stuff baked on, and my atty slowed on performance. I was refilling every hour or so.
I've blown-heat-dried the atty about 3x since last night, and I'm just not refilling like normal.

Please tell me if you've noticed any differences with yours -- on its cost-efficiency related to nicotine liquids, etc.

no, atty/carto meaning atty or carto. ive never seen that style, only been using 510s. and does it say supplier under my name? no, so i dont sell anything. and the gross pics were after heavy vaping. i never magnified my used attys to see whats on there, just an observation. its ok though i enjoy a little sarcasm from ignorant people now and again. good luck with your experiment.

What does that have to do with anything? Post brazen attacks on products... and try to knock them out of people at least trying the product before even understanding how to properly use it.

no, so i dont sell anything.

I'm not so sure about that.

Maybe you signed up here like 100's of others to promote nicotine liquids, their particular ecigarette, etc. Which I have nothing against, until using negative language about a product. If you ask my opinion, PureSmoke is one of the best brands, and not only that... after 8.5 days heavy vaping, that little atomizer cleared itself of residue really nice... and no sir, it wasn't "Gross". That's what a NORMAL ATOMIZER looks like highly magnified. If it was that "Gross" everyone would stop vaping every time they looked at their atomizer.

um, "That's gross.. now what is the ecig brand again?... please let me make an insult and disparage the product."

No, it wasn't gross.. its called NICOTINE LIQUID... and what it normally looks like (under high magnification). So you learned something today... great. That includes using greater care in how you word things, some people may think its a competitor, trying to start a flame war.

I didn't appreciate the one line insult. No apologies for my honesty.

and the gross pics were after heavy vaping. i never magnified my used attys to see whats on there, just an observation. its ok though i enjoy a little sarcasm from ignorant people now and again. good luck with your experiment.

You never magnified them? Then how the heck can you know if they're really, truly clean or not? That's part of what I do in my research friend. The heating element is so small, but can produce so much charred up flavor... and the trick is, getting in really high magnification... SEEING, to understand what's really going on inside the atomizer... or you'll just keep destroying atomizers and learning nothing.

Ignorant? Was that aimed at me too? You're certainly a subtle person with your insults (not), aren't you? I was perceptive from the beginning. Thanks for making my point and I still have no apologies for your insulting opening comment.

BTW, when did you start promoting ... - oh okay *not* promoting vaporbomb.com or maybe some person hacked your sig and put that their for your own commission-based sales? That was an accident I suppose... yes, an oversight oh well. Looks COMMERCIAL 'nuff to me bubs.

Lots of members here put banners under their sigantures to promote their favorite vendors. If you'd been here any length of time before blasting away you'd know that.

This whole thread is starting to look like a back-door "PureSmoke" ad. From what I've read about them they're just as badly made as most of the other curb-market brands. Why get stuck with a proprietary atomizer/cartridge when you can get something like a 510 or 901 and buy from multiple sources (including direct from China) for far less money?

Don't worry. I won't post on this forum any more.

If you'd read the thread you'd known it had to do with what me and the 2nd poster were discussing -- like intelligent people, dry-burning black residue off atomizers. But you and that rude person who could only utter about three words *dur, gross* only care about selling your products here.

You're off topic, a flamer and ... off topic.

*waves* Attitude is in no short supply in the regular world, no need to bring it here. You will not be missed by many. Posting the thread was fine but making a blunder like accusing a regular member of being a shill just because he has a banner promoting his favorite vendor was a major gaffe, and your follow-ups are making you look quite the fool.

Just had to come back, to see how many "tough men" would post comments and attack a stranger. Fools are people who believe every claim posted on a forum. That includes the people SELLING THINGS and putting down competitor products -- I just got sick of reading the insults without a scrap of evidence to back up a word they're claiming!!! Talk about fool, how about taking a complete stranger's word at face value, --now that's foolish.... "Be a wise consumer of information" is a slogan posted on my websites - a very wise piece of advice - strangers that have never actually used the product for any length of time or researched the brands they're attacking...the fools, and the fools who follow them.

Therefore some shill posts, all the "bad reviews". Reviews to knock out competition come a dime a dozen, don't they?

Oh.. the FDA is just big Pharma out to get those poor vendors.. the "only good guys" - yeah, right - it would never be about money, would it? No, of course not. and we all know salesmen never lie.

Great... then we know this web page is telling the Gospel Truth:

A few days ago, when I mentioned chain stores stocking the PureSmoke brand one of your honest vendors who can tell no lies, and never have a biased opinion, posts a long list of BAD REVIEWS... trying to get me to try THEIR ECIG... hmm, where are all these people who spent say... a few months actually using that brand before knocking it.... no, just as we read "Well so and so sez Smoking Everywhere is the best, therefore it must be," and since so and so sez that if I buy his product, my vaping experience will be the best... therefore, it must be so. FOOLS, purchase based on a couple people's word... I'm actually researching to know for myself, before running my mouth off whether something is quality or crap. That's the difference... anything else is bottomline, all about $$$$$$$$ and I'm not fool enough to be convinced otherwise.

Days ago, somebody here tells me, why, only chain stores would sell the *crap* and ohhhhhh, the "good guys" are allllll online, and there to serve... and please their customers beck and call and every whim. Why heck, lets just throw a wedding ring into that order already and be my wife!

hogwash... its about money, bottomline. Whether its the FDA flapping off in ignorance about ecigs being dangerous or not, or a 2 cent vendor... its about money. Never known an honest sales pitch yet.

And I am sick of reading shills posting attacks on good, quality products. If they weren't good, they wouldn't be in chain stores. So, why aren't the leaky products flanking the local Wal Marts and Revco --- since they're soooooo good... after all, since what you're selling is sooooo good.. where's the beef?

There was a day when BOOTLEGGERS peddled moonshine, the way folks on here are peddling nicotine liquid... they don't peddle moonshine anymore. Its illegal. Gotta have a lisence to make and sell booze. Why should common people be able to legally play the role of government and police themselves? They can't even police themselves on a piece of research at Virginia Commonwealth University. LACK OF REGULATION?
For that very cause, over in China... where there's a serious lack of regulations on industry... TOXIC MEDS are regularly exported and make their way into U.S. Drug Wholesale... and killing people... just like those defective Chinese ecigarette products make it here and nobody wants the Chinese stuff... because it is not regulated by government. It'll poison people... it can kill people. No safe controls to guarantee it won't KILL consumers.
China... lack of regulation = Cadmium in Shrek glasses at McDonalds. TOXIC METAL TURNS UP AT MCDONALDS TO POISON AMERICAN CHILDREN... imagine that.

Think the FDA doesn't serve a purpose? I look forward to the FDA regulating the ecig industry... if just to keep lead poisoning out of my ecigarette. I look forward to it. Its really scary, that some people are so greedy for a few dollars they'll lie... outright deny science... and I happen to manage several SCIENCE websites that's had around 3.5 million visitors... so I know a thing or two about science.... and anyone's opinion who cherrypicks their science is a worthless opinion. A person who denies University studies on nicotine levels in ecigs, will deny anything and can not be trusted. Shill you say? Seen too much greed, denial of facts and truth... even molestation of trust coming out of the ecig community.. and its all about MONEY.

How much $$$ am I making?
Hmmm, how much do you think I'm earning?
Well... its big, round and spelled : ZERO. NOTHING. NADA. ZILCH.

I make my money, in straight up publications... earnings from advertisements... from scientific journalism. People read what I have to say, and report. They expect a well thought out report and an honest report, and I don't care if I offend people in the process of speaking the truth.

Yeah, I'm tired of reading attacks on this forum against PureSmoke and other products, posted by somebody who simply wanted to snuff out a competitor -- lame lame.. I sure am, sick as a dog of the misinformation and who's attacking? People trying to sell their VaporKing or their 510... those commissions come at the expense of falsely maligning a good product, lack of integrity, -- sell that product for commissions at any cost and dam the torpedos, full steam ahead, squeeze the competition out of the way -- that from MY HONEST RESEARCH... is a damned good product thank you. I am earning $0 for speaking the truth. I wanted you to know that.

Because some people are liars and don't even know the products they're either buying or pawning on the gullible consumer (as was proven earlier in the thread), well, that's why the FDA is there, TO THINK FOR PEOPLE... because they have trouble thinking for themselves and going to have no choice but to move in and regulate the industry before some darn fool goes poisoning himself.

Maybe those shills posting FALSE information about products they're trying to put the squeeze on (um, misinformation), will shut up and go away, and find some other area of commerce they can exploit. The FDA will approve the good ecigs, and give the *crap* the boot. Got to have a lisence! When the FDA cracks down... it will be as legal as a person trying to sell nicotine liquids as it's legal to sell moonshine online without a lisence.

When it gets too expensive -- oh those fees, fees, fees -- those who can't afford those degrees in Chemistry and can't afford those lisences to commercially distribute a controlled substance, it'll just free up and squeeze out a lot of shills... leaving the industry in the hands of competant people who actually can afford the lisences... people who actually do have the "best ecigarette" -- opinions here don't mean anything -- but when put to the test at Virginia Commonwealth University -- the FDA will listen for a Professor's opinion on what ecig lives up to its claims on the package (VCU already made it very clear -- people can't go around selling something that does not deliver as much nicotine as it "claims" on the package --- in other words : LIES from ecig distributors and the research Virginia Commonwealth performed, proved it wasn't accurate information.. research .... scientific documentation... lisences... and its going to be mandatory... lisences... or close down those little online shops...

lulz. I don't run an online shop and I'm not a vendor or ecig distributor. But Greed just chaffs my hide.

Just take a look on the web at : moonshine poisoning and you wonder why ATF and FDA, etc are controlling the drug supply? The FDA has been TOO LENIENT up to this point... way too lenient.

As for bad reviews, I can dig up bad reviews on EVERY ecigarette brand... everything from leaking and melting cartridges to bad chemical tasting nicotine liquids. Aint nobody immune from pawning their own share of *crap* and *defective merchandise*. But the only one I've said anything about is the group that RIPPED ME OFF .. Smoking Everywhere... Fraudulent Advertising (yep, I can actually confirm that with documentation for my claims, and what they're doing is illegal by law) -- and just days ago, leave it to a shill vendor to squeal, "Just as soon as something goes wrong, people scream Lawsuit." Sure enough.. and make it a class action lawsuit. I came and I saw.
BTW, I haven't tried N-Joye... so I can't say good or bad about them either way... can I? If I did... I'd be a liar, because I don't know until I've tried it ... and studied how to make it work.

I don't believe most of those people mouthing off about PureSmoke actually tried the product. I don't believe those vendors attacking Johnson Creek really speak without bias... they have their own liquids to sell.

i.e., very interesting reading tonight.

All your personal prejudices and extreme bias aside for a moment: Those on this forum who want to deny established scientific research... deny it. Ignorance will get you everywhere... like prison time... ignorance of the law is no excuse ... and REGULATION IS COMING YOUR WAY, FROM THE FDA... for those very reasons... CHERRYPICKING what you want the public to believe... cherrypicking your facts -- including the fraudulent claims of nicotine % in your liquids. Big tobacco tried to do that long, long ago.. lying to the American public, it didn't work. All the money in the world won't change scientific data. Those people who deny VCU's research, will deny anything, including lying to consumers about what they're pawning / distributing... and for that cause, the FDA will have no choice but to regulate before some poor fool is poisoned. Yeah, I've got sort of tired weeks ago, reading everything from subtle snide comments motivated by greed to the scientific illiteracy, i.e., alarmists with their irrationally wild claims that if you get a drop of Johnson Creek nicotine liquid on your skin, why you'll just slip in a coma and die!!! etc etc on the lack of truth floating around -- the sheer, unbridled ignorance! the sad thing is, people actually believe the lies, quicker than facts.

Yeah, I read it all here folks...and nothing but a lot of misinformation circulated. Advice on how to use vinegar and mechanical oil on your atomizers??? EVEN THE ADMINISTRATOR TELLS PEOPLE TO TRY SUGGESTIONS AT THEIR OWN RISK -- EVEN THE ADMINISTRATOR HAS BETTER SENSE than a lot of regulars on the forum... so just how many ways to destroy your equipment are regularly posted? Pseudo-Science posing as "Helpful Advice". Pray tell. But there's plenty of vendors eager to sell more crap... never mind that ALL ECIGS have their share of critics and naysayers.

Opinions come a dime a dozen, and you know what they say about opinions... like an *******... every one has one.

The technique looks promising, and the photography is great.

Honestly, I looked back through the thread, and I couldn't see any shilling, trolling or attacks.

"The first pics looked gross" comment I interpreted to mean that the poster didn't realize a used atty could look like that, not that YOUR atty in particular looked vile.

And as for asking what kind of atty that is, I was wondering the same thing myself. That doesn't mean we were attacking whatever brand or style it is.

Respectfully, I think you're being overly defensive, Sharon_NC. Step back, take a deep breath, and everything will be fine. I've seen the dry burn cleaning method advocated before, but your pictures are marvelous proof that it works.

Just a build up of steam ... from reading over a few weeks. A load of bias here, maligning a product there... trying scare tactics so people are too afraid to try to experiment where they might learn something (i.e., don't let nicotine liquids get on your skin... you'll die.) to make sure you keep buying liquids from this or that bloke. Lies. Nobody is distributing nicotine in its pure form for vaping for crying out loud... just one of the many misleading pieces of information I've read, and tonight, when valley boy sez "Gross" about my photography... it just hit the wrong nerve.

Just a thought. Ever noticed that on this forum, nobody is actually discussing the versatile electronic cigarette styles and varieties that exist without calling this or that system *crap* -- and yet, if you ask them some real questions about the system, they can't tell you anything real about it. Just a lot of hear-say... and their "reports" borrowed from scam sites like Smoking Everywhere that's out to attack every system but their own... their own of course is always #1. Beware. If something sounds too good to be true (including ... lol... Valley Boy had never seen a REAL ATOMIZER with nicotine liquid... perhaps because if you post a photo of the truth... putting atomizers in their real light ... instead of those perfect photoshopped images... sales advertisements... THE TRUTH BITES... but hey, I personally don't care about that. I'm not here to sell one brand over the other. Valley Boy had never seen a real atomizer. And how long has he been on this site, and never seen "Gross" nicotine liquid build-up before. Gotta post those unreal pix of the perfect atomizer... the truth might drive away sales, but tonight I was accused of a "Pure Smoke Sales Ad" instead of focusing on the original topic. But of course! So much bias, so little facts from a few vendors that want to hold a tight monopoly on e-cig sales.

P.S., if I want anything from vendors... I'll purchase it on the sly, and test it thoroughly, and give 'em hell on the web. My income does NOT rely on electronic cigarettes.

 Ask the vendors what kind of atomizer it is. See what kind of knowledge they actually have about electronic cigarettes in general (and see if they can give an informed report without biased opinions, slanted to sell their products for a change.)

I've never seen an atomizer like that before either, inquiring minds want to know!

Ask all those "informed vendors" to explain what kind of technology it is... and how it works.

I think you'd have better luck over in the mods forums... at least they sometimes do know a thing or two about electronics.
