The black gunk physically wraps around the coil so the only way to remove the gunk successfully is to remove all three seals and poke at the carbon with a sharp object (I use a safety pin).

Once the carbon is removed, rinse/soak it in water (or some other non-toxic solution such as vodka).

If the coil is too tight or not spaced evenly, you can adjust it by moving it around.
