A buddy of mine told me to and I quote "Soak the coils and wicks overnight in some coca cola, itll eat off all the gunk" Any truth to this? I went ahead and took apart a protank 3 coil and threw it in out of curiosity. The coil was gunked a long time ago so its not a huge deal if it kills it, but if it works it might be a good way to save a little extra money.
Well.... yes. And probably no, but technically maybe yes, and even then with caveats. I apologize for that sentence now, but it was fun typing it.
Coca-cola has carbonic acid, phosphoric acid and smaller amounts of citric acid. They'll both do a good job of dissolving stuff given a bit of time, along with the sugars it's what slowly wears down your tooth enamel. Sugared is a bad idea as unless you can get all the residue out, the coil is going to suffer for it. But diet sodas still contain the acids, so might well do OK. White vinegar (acetic acid) can also be used, which is why people will often run a diluted mix of it through their coffee maker to help keep it flowing, especially if they have hard water.
I've never done it, but I'd be super careful with it -- it can and will eventually eat away at chromed parts and such, depending on how much acid is involved and how cheap/thin the plating is. I believe the average ph of most sodas is around 3.4ph. You can google more on both once you know you're looking for. Not really sure how cost effective it is even if it works -- as you can just buy powdered citric acid or vinegar and such.
