Did you try the shoe string? I tried your way and failed, shoe string it opened straight away.

where do I tie the shoe string?

Around it so it tightens on itself when you undo the device. The other way we both tried makes the device kind of into an oval.... Impossible to undo. Need like a 1.5 mm Shoe string.

I must be stupid b/c I don't see how this works. I have a shoelace around the control ring, but I don't see how it's helping.

I had this problem on the top cap of my clear AVS but never anywhere else before, sounds like you must have some dirt lodged behind the CR, try to squirt a lubricant like WD40 or a rubber belt dressing into the threads, let it penetrate then clean and dry it well and try the strap wrench again.

This is why you always have a backup device to avoid the frustration when cleaning or something happens.

Zai, every when you put vaseline to the threads? Threads needs a little care to all devices. Threads and o-rings need vaseline to work smooth. When you feel that something is going to go wrong, vaseline is always the solution.

I have dark matter on the threads and inside of my ggts. I think it's weakening the vape. How do I get rid of that? If it's aluminum, would oil and vinegar be worth a shot or would that be detrimental?

on the external threads i use a little WD 40 and an old toothbrush which cleans them up a treat on th inside of the AVS i use a little pipe cleaning brush and a little soap and elbow grease.
Works fine for me

Now if I can just get these fuse screws in there...
