Interesting... if anyone sees the actual study - post it.

I wonder about this:

The trial researchers found that about 9% of smokers who used e-cigarettes were able to stop smoking for up to a year, and possibly longer.

That compared with about 4% of smokers who used devices which did not contain nicotine.

[Since it is 'compared with' vs. 'including', I would think that then 9+4 = 13% were able to stop smoking - closer to the 18% figure that Bill posted recently - another study of course.]

And in the two trials - regarded as "gold standard" evidence - 36% of e-cigarette users managed to halve the number of conventional cigarettes they smoked, compared with 28% who used placebo devices.

There was no evidence of serious adverse effects among people using e-cigarettes

[And here, I'm wondering if the 'placebo devices' WERE the no nicotine ecigs. If that is the case then the 13% above is correct and would make this 'combined' stat - 64% who were able to cut their cigarette consumption in half with ecigs - nic or no nic. That is more in line with my personal observations locally and on the forum as well although I think our own stats are even better.]

Thanks Dr. :thumb:

I was correct!

"Two RCTs compared EC with placebo (non-nicotine) EC, "

And imo, this tells a bit more than a standard placebo because you're still going to get a 'positive response' of vapor whereas most placebos are truly neutral.

And it tends to confirm the theory - that I've put forth in one way or another - the Sherlock examples - that smoke/vapor is a percentage of the habit. I think 50% or more - although without any nicotine some would surely fail. But nic only as with patches and gum has even less success than these placebos.

So nic only without vapor fails and vapor only without nic works. esp. to reduce cigs. Nic and vapor both, work even better!!

I know it's hard with the future follow-ups involved here but a larger sample would be truly beneficial.
