Cohasset may limit sales of most tobacco products - The Boston Globe

A positive note:
"
“We understand the intention of the Board of Health, and it’s incredibly admirable,” Carr said. “But we have to focus on the broader aspect. For me, it’s a commercial and economic development issue. Limiting people’s ability to sell goods is not something I was interested in supporting.”"

Dr. Mike comments:
"
In an interview, Dr. Michael Siegel, a tobacco control specialist at Boston University School of Public Health, questioned the effectiveness of such a ban, since smokers will merely go to a different store, and worried that the approach was overreaching.
If pharmacies can’t sell cigarettes, “why should they be allowed to sell potato chips or soda, or anything that can lead to obesity?” he said."

A negative note

27 local Boards of Health in MA have banned use of e-cigarettes in workplaces even though products have helped a million smokers quit, emit ZERO smoke and pose no risks to public.

30 local boards have banned tobacco sales at pharmacies despite no evidence it reduces or prevents smoking.

MA Municipal Association's DJ Wilson assisted Cohasset BOH draft similar counterproductive and intolerant regulations, indicating that he's been advocating the regulations already approved by several dozen Boards of Health, and that he's probably urged many/most/all other local Boards of Health in MA to do the same.

I collaborated with DJ Wilson 10-25 years ago to enact workplace smoking bans by dozens of local Boards of Health in MA (before the state legislature passed a statewide law around 2002).

A year ago, DJ asked me to remove him from my weekly e-mail list, which was probably because he didn't like reading the facts about e-cigarettes every week in my e-mails.
