I'm a newbie, vaping 5 weeks on 2 devices, a nautilus mini on a vision spinner 2 and an Egrip. After 4 weeks the mini is producing noticably less vapor regardless of the voltage setting. I've read that coil usually goes bad by producing a burnt taste (I've had the experience already with the Egrip). Can a coil come to it's end by losing some of it's ability to produce heat or do I have some other issue?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Yes, in fact that (or just quitting) is how you can tell a coil is going bad. Burnt taste is usually a different problem, caused by the type of liquid, the amount of power or how you inhale.

And five weeks is a pretty good life from a coil.

The loner it's used the more the coil gets gunked up, and the more vapor production is lost. Time to swap out, new coil head, let saturate with juice and enjoy a vape.

For those that rebuild, it's a simple matter of pulling the wick, pulsing the coil to clean it, and putting in some fresh wick.

Or if you wick with mesh a quick rinse and a dry burn....or that works for me anyway.

So I replaced the mini coil and that solved the issues. Lesson learned.

Someone mentioned that the choice of liquid influences coil life. Can anyone elaborate on that? Right now I'm vaping a coffee flavor called Mach10 from ITCvapes. I went with that because my brother who lives with me griped about the odor of the sweet fruit flavors I was trying at the time. He doesn't notice the coffee flavor because we both drink coffee. The same thing helps at work where, happily, I'm vaping on the shop floor with no objections so far.

(I've been watching ecig news clips on youtube. The public health community is in a panic because they know if vaping is allowed to grow without interference, tobacco consumption, and the taxes it collects will decline rapidly. The government will lose interest in their tobacco research and control and a lot of them will be looking for jobs. I know, they could work for vaping companies!)

Heavy VG based liquids will burn your coils out faster (at least they do with the non-nautilus coils, not sure about the BVCs). I vape 50/50 vg/pg liquid which is a good balance. I have some 70/30 VG/PG on the way, we'll see if I get decreased coil life. Darker liquids can be harder on coils as well. VG is very thick and juice with too high VG can cause wicking problems in tanks with replaceable coils heads. The Nautilus Mini appears to be one of the tanks that does well with higher VG juice. I vaped Cinnamon Roll (darker liquid) for a month on one coil in my NM.

Mount Baker Vapor has a color indicator listed under each juice product description. Some people stay away from darker liquids.

Washing a coil in water is ok? I'm thinking that it might interfere with the electrical connection on the bottom where the fluid doesn't touch.

Fine. Just let it dry 1st.

Even some mechanical mods you can give a bath, when they have batteries you can take out, like the REO. I give mine a bath just like you would wash dishes once a week. :)
